Chapter 6 - A crack in the foundation

By sunrise, the grand estate was on absolute lockdown. High-powered vehicles patrolled the perimeter, and no one entered or left without Domenico’s personal clearance. Inside the bright, marble-tiled dining room, Domenico sat at the head of the table. Little Sofia sat in a high chair next to him, happily eating sliced strawberries, entirely unaware of the storm brewing around her.

Vance walked in, carrying a laptop and a fresh set of documents stamped with official state seals.

"We ran the DNA comparison, Boss," Vance said quietly, setting the laptop in front of Domenico. "We used the hair sample from Sofia’s baby brush and compared it against your profile in the family database."

Domenico held his breath—a rare moment of vulnerability for the feared mafia kingpin. His fingers hovered over the keyboard. "And?"

"It's a ninety-nine point nine percent match," Vance reported, his voice filled with quiet awe. "Sofia isn't your niece, Domenico. She's your biological daughter."

Domenico closed his eyes for a long, heavy moment. A tear slipped down his rosy cheek, disappearing into his short beard. Five years ago, he had been told his pregnant wife, Elena, had perished in a car bombing orchestrated by rival families. He had spent half a decade grieving, channeling his heartbreak into building an untouchable empire.

"Elena didn't die in the crash," Domenico whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"She survived the impact long enough to be brought to St. Jude’s under a false name," Vance explained, pointing to the screen. "She was kept in a coma for over three years until the baby was carried to term. Sofia was born fourteen months ago. Camilla and Marco found out through their contact at the clinic. They let Elena die after the delivery, stole the newborn, and claimed Camilla gave birth in secret to secure the trust funds."

Domenico stood up so fast his chair skidded across the marble floor. The sheer magnitude of the betrayal hit him like a physical blow. His own sister had stolen his daughter, raised her in front of his eyes as a niece, and abused her when she accidentally threatened their cover-up.

Sofia looked up at him, offering a small strawberry with her tiny hand. "Daddy?" she babbled softly, trying out the word for the first time.

Domenico leaned down, scooping his daughter into a tight, protective embrace. He kissed her forehead, his eyes burning with absolute vengeance.

"Bring them up," Domenico commanded Vance. "Now."
