Chapter 4 - Whispers at midnight

At two in the morning, the estate was bathed in quiet moonlight. Domenico lay awake in his private quarters, his mind racing as he replayed the events of the day. The yellowed paper sat on his nightstand, illuminated by the faint glow of the streetlights outside. It was a birth record, but the names listed as the biological parents were partially redacted under an official state seal—a seal that didn't match standard New York registry protocols.
A faint sound caught his attention—the soft click of a door handle downstairs.
Domenico moved instantly. Without making a sound, he slipped into his black trousers and shirt, retrieving his suppressed pistol from the drawer. He glided down the carpeted hallway like a shadow, stopping at the top of the grand staircase.
Below, in the dimly lit study, Camilla stood near the safe behind the bookshelf. She wore an elegant dark robe, her fair hair pulled back, her hands trembling as she attempted to enter a combination on the digital keypad.
"The code was changed yesterday, Camilla," Domenico’s voice echoed down from the balcony.
Camilla gasped, spinning around and clutching her chest. "Domenico! You scared me!"
"What are you looking for?" Domenico asked, slowly descending the stairs, his weapon held loosely at his side.
"I... I was looking for my jewelry box," Camilla lied, her voice high and strained. "I left my diamond necklace in the safe last week."
"Your necklace is in your bedroom," Domenico said, stopping at the bottom step. "You're looking for the original hospital transfer files. The ones you thought were destroyed fourteen months ago."
Camilla broke down, her cruel exterior shattering into frantic tears. She sank into a plush armchair, burying her rosy face in her hands. "You don't know what they would do to us, Domenico! If the commission finds out, Marco's life is forfeit! They'll think we betrayed the family!"
Domenico crossed his arms, his dark tattoo catching the moonlight. "Who is 'they', Camilla? Who were you hiding that baby from?"
"It was Marco's debt!" Camilla sobbed, looking up with wide, desperate eyes. "He owed fifteen million dollars to the Moretti family in Chicago! They told him if he didn't deliver an heir to secure the Romano trust, they would execute him! We had no choice!"
Domenico stared at his sister, his brow furrowing in disgust. "An heir? Sofia is fourteen months old! How does a toddler clear a mafia debt?"
"Because the trust requires a direct bloodline descendent to unlock the offshore accounts!" Camilla cried out. "If the baby isn't legitimate, the money stays frozen! We needed that birth record to prove to the bank that Sofia belonged to the main line!"
Domenico stepped closer, his jaw setting hard. "So you faked the birth. You pretended Sofia was yours."
Camilla wiped her eyes quickly, a sudden shadow crossing her face. "Yes! We bought the records from the clinic! That's all it was! Just a financial trick to save Marco's skin!"
Domenico looked into his sister's eyes, reading every micro-expression. She was telling part of the truth, but her terror wasn't about the money. It was about where the baby actually came from.

"Where did you get the child, Camilla?" Domenico asked softly.
Camilla froze, her lips trembling, but before she could answer, a loud crash echoed from the front gates outside.
