Chapter 5 - The bloodline audit

Sirens didn't blare, but the quiet hum of high-end engines filled the driveway. Domenico sprinted to the window of the study, pulling back the heavy velvet curtains. Two black SUVs had parked near the fountain, and Vance was already standing at the front door with four armed guards.

Marco walked out from the side corridor, dressed in his dark suit, looking triumphant.

"You called them?" Camilla gasped, standing up from her chair.

"I called our partners in Chicago," Marco said, his voice aggressive and ruthless once more. "Domenico is digging too deep. If he goes to the hospital tomorrow, he ruins the entire deal. The Morettis are here to secure their collateral."

Domenico turned slowly, his intense brown eyes locking onto Marco. "You brought rival bosses onto my land?"

"You forced my hand, brother-in-law!" Marco yelled, pulling a handgun from his belt. "Give me the envelope, and we let you walk away with your title! Keep pushing, and we clean house tonight!"

Domenico didn't flinch. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the yellowed paper, and held it up between two fingers. "You think this paper is your salvation, Marco? You didn't even read the full seal, did you?"

Marco hesitated, his gun hand wavering slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"The hospital where this paper was issued wasn't a private clinic in Queens," Domenico said, his battle-hardened face cold as ice. "It was the specialized surgical unit at St. Jude's—the military facility where my wife was taken after the convoy attack five years ago."

Camilla let out a sharp gasp, her face draining of all color. "No..."

"Yes," Domenico growled, stepping forward with lethal intent. "The wife you told me died in surgery along with my unborn child."

Marco’s eyes widened in sheer horror as the pieces began falling into place. "That's... that's impossible. The medical reports said—"

"The medical reports were signed by the same doctor who died in a hit-and-run two weeks after Sofia was born!" Domenico roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above.

Outside, the heavy oak front doors burst open. Vance stepped inside, holding a heavy tactical rifle, backed by six of Domenico's personal elite guards. The Moretti men who had stepped out of the SUVs were already on their knees in the foyer, disarmed and surrounded.

"House is secure, Boss," Vance announced coldly. "The Chicago boys thought they were meeting Marco for a quiet pickup. They didn't realize your personal squad was stationed at the perimeter."

Domenico walked up to Marco, who stood paralyzed with fear. Domenico casually reached out, plucked the gun from Marco’s weak grip, and handed it to Vance.

"Lock them in the wine cellar," Domenico ordered, pointing at Marco and Camilla. "We're going to have a very long conversation when the sun comes up."
