Chapter 1 - The Brass Key

The grand dining hall of the Vale estate was bathed in warm, cinematic light from crystal chandeliers, casting long shadows across the polished walnut floor. Outside, the rain tapped steadily against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the rolling hills of Long Island. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken threats.
Roman Vale sat at the head of the long walnut table. At forty years old, he commanded an underground empire built on absolute power, unquestioned loyalty, and cold precision. He was tall, heavily muscular, and ruggedly handsome, his thick dark hair styled neatly back, a shadowed light stubble defining his sharp jawline. Subtle dark tattoos peeked out from beneath his white dress shirt collar and the cuffs of his ivory suit jacket, which featured delicate gold embroidery along the lapel. A gold luxury timepiece glinted against his wrist as his intense dark eyes scanned the men seated around him.
Sitting to his right was Graham Pierce, forty-eight, Roman’s longtime attorney and chief financial advisor. Polished, intelligent, and impeccably controlled, Graham wore a dark tailored suit, crisp white shirt, and dark silk tie. Across the room, standing near the mahogany doors, was Marco Russo, Roman’s forty-three-year-old security chief. Built like an iron pillar in his fitted black suit and discreet earpiece, Marco watched every breath in the room with sharp, predatory eyes.
Near the service doorway, thirty-one-year-old Megan Cole stood quietly in her classic black maid dress, white collar, and pale white apron. Her long brown hair was pulled back into a loose bun. She kept her eyes lowered, her hands clasped tightly over her apron, her chest tight with constant anxiety whenever her four-year-old daughter was nearby.
Four-year-old Sadie Cole had long sandy-blond hair and wore a dark green polka-dot dress with white socks and black Mary Jane shoes. In her small hands, she held three wax crayons—one red, one yellow, one blue. While the adults were locked in silent negotiation, Sadie walked away from her mother's side, her small shoes making faint clicking sounds against the hardwood.
She stopped right beside Roman’s chair, looking up at the feared mafia boss with curious, fearless eyes.
Sadie tugged softly at the fabric of Roman's ivory suit pants.
"Look under the table, sir," Sadie said softly.
The entire dining room fell dead silent. The suited lieutenants at the table froze. Graham’s pen hovered over his notepad, his knuckles turning white.
Megan gasped, her face draining of color as she rushed forward from the service doorway. "Sadie! No! I am so sorry, Mr. Vale—"
Sadie ignored her mother entirely. She dropped to her hands and knees, crawling beneath the heavy walnut dining table after a blue crayon that had rolled away.
Roman did not yell. He raised a single tattooed hand, stopping Megan in her tracks. His intense dark eyes followed the four-year-old child as she squirmed beneath the table. Graham stopped speaking altogether, his jaw setting into a tight, unnatural line.
A moment later, Sadie crawled back out from under the table, holding her lost blue crayon in one hand.
In her other hand, held tightly between her small fingers, was a small brass key tied with a faded blue ribbon.
Roman’s stoic, controlled expression shattered instantly. His eyes locked onto the faded blue ribbon as if he were staring at a ghost from his past.
Slowly, carefully, Roman reached down and took the brass key from Sadie's palm. He held the faded blue ribbon between his fingers, his dark eyes narrowing into sharp slits.
He looked up toward Graham and the other men at the table. His voice dropped into a low, chilling baritone that made the temperature in the room drop ten degrees.
"Who went into my study?" Roman asked coldly.
Nobody answered. The lieutenants exchanged nervous glances.
Graham remained perfectly still, but for a fraction of a second, his eyes flicked toward the dark corridor leading to the east wing.
Roman noticed the movement instantly.
Before Roman could speak, Sadie raised her arm, pointing her small index finger toward the shadowed hallway behind Roman’s chair.
Roman, Marco, and the lieutenants turned at once.
At the far end of the corridor, a tall, dark figure moved quickly around the corner, vanishing into the shadows of the mansion.
Marco immediately stepped toward the corridor, his hand moving smoothly toward the holster beneath his suit jacket.
Roman stood up from his chair, staring down at the small brass key resting in his palm.
Sadie reached up and quietly tugged his jacket sleeve again. She pointed her small finger toward the faded blue ribbon and whispered:
"The man said this was supposed to stay upstairs."
Roman slowly raised his eyes, locking his gaze directly onto Graham Pierce.

Graham’s face lost every drop of color, his skin turning as pale as ash.
At that exact moment, a faint, heavy door-closing sound echoed down from Roman’s private study on the second floor.
