Chapter 2 - The Echo in the Corridor

The sound of the door closing on the second floor echoed through the silent mansion like a gunshot.
Marco Russo was already moving. He cleared the dining room threshold in long, disciplined strides, his hand resting on his sidearm as he rounded the corner into the east corridor.
"Lock down the wing!" Marco shouted into his earpiece, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings. "Sub-level two security, seal the terrace exits!"
In the dining room, the suited lieutenants stood up from the walnut table in confusion, looking to Roman for direction.
Roman did not move immediately. He stood tall in his ivory suit, holding the small brass key between his fingers, his gaze remaining fixed on Graham Pierce.
"Roman, this is absurd," Graham said, his voice forced and fast as he adjusted his dark silk tie with trembling fingers. "It’s clearly an intruder or an unvetted domestic worker. I was sitting right here beside you the entire afternoon. You know my loyalty to this family."
Roman walked slowly around the head of the table. His polished brown leather shoes made no sound against the thick Persian rug. He stopped right in front of Graham, towering over his attorney.
"I didn't ask where you were sitting, Graham," Roman whispered, his deep voice carrying an absolute, terrifying weight. "I asked who went into my study."
Megan rushed forward, pulling Sadie into her arms. She held the four-year-old girl tightly against her apron, her body trembling with terror. "Mr. Vale, please... Sadie didn't mean to touch anything. We will leave right now—"
Roman turned his head toward Megan. The cold, lethal glare in his eyes softened by a fraction as he looked at the frightened mother and child.
"You're not leaving, Megan," Roman said calmly. "You and your daughter stay right here with my men."
Roman signaled to two armed guards standing by the doorway. "Take Megan and Sadie to the private sitting room near the foyer. Nobody enters that room without my personal authorization."
"Yes, Mr. Vale," the lead guard replied, respectfully guiding Megan and Sadie out of the dining hall.
Roman turned back to Graham. "You're coming upstairs with me."
Graham swallowed hard, his throat dry, but he nodded slowly, falling into step behind Roman as they climbed the grand spiral staircase leading to the second floor.
When they reached the upper gallery, Marco was already standing outside the heavy oak double doors of Roman's private study. The door was slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness visible inside the room.
"Clear the doorway, Marco," Roman instructed softly.
Marco pushed the heavy oak doors open, his weapon raised, sweeping the room with professional precision. The private study was dimly lit, the floor-to-ceiling velvet drapes rustling gently near the open balcony doors. Rain drifted inside, wetting the polished mahogany floorboards.
Beside the dark wooden desk, an oil painting depicting the Vale family crest had been swung open on its hidden brass hinges.
Behind the painting, the door to Roman's heavy steel wall safe sat wide open.
Roman walked slowly across the room, stopping before the open safe. He looked inside.

The stacks of bearer bonds and cash were untouched. The velvet jewelry boxes were undisturbed.
The only thing missing from the safe was a single, black leather ledger that had belonged to Roman's late father—and resting on the empty shelf in its place was a second faded blue ribbon, identical to the one Sadie had found under the table.
