Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's Secret

The silence in the study was heavy as Roman picked up Sadie's crayon drawing.
He looked at the small girl, who was now calmly adding green polka dots to her paper.
"Sadie," Roman asked quietly. "Did you see someone at the storm drain today?"
Sadie nodded without looking up from her drawing. "When Mommy was folding towels by the window this morning. A big black car stopped by the gate, and the man with the shiny watch gave a blue box to a man in a black jacket."
Graham’s face was entirely void of color. He backed away toward the open balcony doors, his hands trembling violently. "This is a setup! Someone paid this maid to coach her daughter!"
"Nobody paid my daughter!" Megan snapped, a sudden wave of fierce, protective anger surging through her timid demeanor. She stepped between Graham and Sadie, her dark eyes flashing. "We don't know anything about your business, Mr. Pierce! We just do our work!"
"Enough," Roman commanded, his voice cutting through the tension like a steel blade.
Marco pulled his sidearm, pointing it directly at Graham's chest. "Step away from the balcony, Pierce. Hands where I can see them."
Graham slowly raised his hands, his confident, aristocratic mask completely shattered. "Roman... listen to me. I was forced into this. You don't know who is behind this."
"You're going to tell me everything downstairs," Roman said coldly.
Roman signaled to Marco, who promptly cuffed Graham's wrists behind his back and led the weeping attorney out of the study under heavy guard.
Once the room was clear, Roman turned his attention back to Megan and Sadie. He walked over to his desk, sat in his leather chair, and gestured toward the plush velvet armchairs across from him.
"Sit down, Megan," Roman said gently.
Megan hesitated, then sat nervously on the edge of the chair, keeping Sadie close against her side.
"How long have you worked in this house, Megan?" Roman asked, resting his hands on the desk, his luxury timepiece glinting in the lamp light.
"Four years, Mr. Vale," Megan answered softly, her voice shaking slightly. "Since Sadie was an infant. You hired me after my late husband passed away."
Roman picked up the brass key with the faded blue ribbon. He held it up toward the light.
"This faded blue ribbon didn't come from my study safe, Megan," Roman revealed softly. "This ribbon belonged to a vintage jewelry box that was stolen from my family's summer home twelve years ago. A box that belonged to my late sister, Clara."
Megan gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes widened in genuine shock.
"My sister vanished twelve years ago," Roman continued, his intense dark eyes locking onto Megan's face. "And the only person who knew where that jewelry box was hidden... was her private assistant."

Roman set the key on the desk and leaned forward.
"Her private assistant was your older sister, wasn't she, Megan?"
