Chapter 7 - The Breach at the Gates

The heavy rain outside the estate turned into a wild, howling storm as night fell over Long Island.
Upstairs in the grand master suite on the third floor, Megan sat on the plush velvet sofa, watching Sadie color happily at a mahogany coffee table. The four-year-old girl was humming a soft tune, filling a drawing book with bright blue and green crayon strokes.
The heavy suite door opened, and Roman walked into the room.
Megan stood up immediately, her hands clasped nervously over her apron. "Mr. Vale... is everything alright downstairs?"
Roman walked across the room and stood by the window, looking out into the rain-slicked courtyard below.
"My sister Clara is alive, Megan," Roman said softly, his deep voice carrying an overwhelming weight of emotion.
Megan gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "What... what did you say?"
"She was taken to a private medical facility in Switzerland twelve years ago," Roman explained, turning to face her. "Your sister Hannah didn't abandon her. Hannah stayed by her side to protect her from the people who tried to destroy my family."
Tears welled up in Megan's eyes as the dark mystery that had shattered her family twelve years ago began to unspool into the light. "Hannah... she protected your sister?"
"Yes," Roman said gently. "And the brass key Sadie found under my dining table today is the physical key to the facility where Clara is being held."
Before Megan could answer, a loud, ear-splitting alarm shattered the quiet of the estate.
Red emergency strobe lights began to flash along the baseboards of the master suite. Heavy steel security shutters slid down over the windows with a deafening metallic thud, sealing the room into total isolation.
Marco’s voice crackled sharp and urgent through Roman’s earpiece: "Boss! We have a perimeter breach at the main gates! Three armored tactical SUVs smashed through the outer barriers! They're moving toward the main house!"
Roman pulled a heavy tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster, his movements fast, practiced, and deadly.
He turned to Megan, grabbing her firmly by her shoulder with his warm, massive hand.
"Stay inside this room," Roman commanded in an absolute, unyielding baritone. "The doors are reinforced steel. Nobody gets through them except me and Marco."
"Roman, please be careful!" Megan cried out, using his first name for the very first time.

Roman looked at her, a fierce, protective warmth flashing in his dark eyes. "I will protect this house, Megan. And I will protect you and Sadie."
He turned and strode out of the suite, the heavy steel door locking behind him with a pneumatic hiss.
