Chapter 1 - the fallen cake

The central ballroom of the Moretti mansion was a breathtaking display of wealth, power, and high-society opulence. Soft golden light poured from giant crystal chandeliers, illuminating high ceilings, gilded pillars, and marble floors polished to a mirror finish. Surrounded by manicured gardens and protected by state-of-the-art security, the mansion stood as the heart of Dominic Moretti’s vast empire.

Tall, broad-shouldered, ruggedly handsome, and frighteningly calm, Dominic Moretti commanded absolute respect wherever he walked. His thick dark hair was neatly styled, his jaw framed by a light layer of stubble, and his open-collar white dress shirt exposed dark, intricate tattoos along his collarbone. Wearing an immaculate white suit, a luxury gold wristwatch, and polished white shoes, the feared Mafia boss sat at the head of a massive mahogany dining table.

Tonight was the eighth birthday of Dominic’s beloved son, Ethan. Dressed in an elegant navy suit with a crisp white shirt and polished black shoes, eight-year-old Ethan sat beside his father. Ethan was well-mannered, gentle, and deeply loved by Dominic, serving as the bright light in the boss's stern, dangerous world.

Near the long mahogany table, Lily’s mother adjusted the white apron over her neat pale-blue maid uniform. Beautiful, hardworking, and fiercely protective of her daughter, she had served as Dominic’s head housekeeper for years. Her soft brown hair was tied back neatly, her fair, rosy cheeks slightly flushed from coordinating the grand event.

Beside the long banquet table stood three-year-old Lily. Unusually brave, observant, and fearless whenever she sensed someone was in trouble, the adorable toddler wore a bright yellow party dress with cute pink shoes. Her curly brown hair bounced as she watched the guests.

At the center of the table rested a magnificent, multi-tiered birthday cake covered in rich vanilla frosting. Ethan smiled happily, picked up his silver fork, and cut a large forkful of cake. He raised it toward his mouth.

Before the cake could touch his lips, little Lily darted forward like a flash of yellow light. With surprising strength, her tiny hand slapped the fork out of Ethan’s hand, sending the fork and the slice of cake flying off the plate and crashing onto the cold marble floor.

"Lily!" her mother gasped in pure shock, her face draining of color.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent. Whispers rippled across the room as powerful syndicate leaders and high-society guests stared in disbelief. Lily’s mother rushed forward, pulling her daughter close into her arms, trembling in terror at what the consequences might be.

Dominic slowly rose from the head of the table. His massive, muscular frame towered over the room as he walked with calm, deliberate steps across the polished marble. He stopped right in front of the mother and child, slowly kneeling down to bring himself to the tiny girl's eye level.

"Why did you do that?" Dominic asked, his deep voice eerily calm and controlled.

Lily didn't cry or hide. She raised her tiny hand, pointing directly toward the shadowed kitchen service corridor where staff had been bringing out dishes. Ethan watched nervously from his chair, clutching his napkin.

"A man touched Ethan’s cake," Lily whispered softly in a clear, brave voice.

Dr. Harris, the Moretti family’s trusted private physician, stepped out from the side wall. Calm, intelligent, and sharp-eyed, Dr. Harris was wearing an elegant dark suit and carrying a compact silver medical testing kit. Hearing the child's words, the doctor immediately knelt beside the fallen piece of cake on the marble floor. He pulled out a small chemical swab and touched it to the white frosting.

Within seconds, the swab turned a violent, dark crimson.

Dr. Harris looked up at Dominic, his face grave and deadly serious. "Positive. Ethan cannot eat this."

Dominic’s expression instantly turned ice-cold. The air in the ballroom grew suffocatingly tense. With a single gesture from Dominic, heavy armed bodyguards rushed to lock every heavy entrance door, trapping all guests and staff inside the room.

"He had a little silver box," Lily explained to Dominic, her brown eyes bright and innocent. "He rubbed something into the frosting."

Dominic kept his dark eyes on the little girl. "Did you see who he was, Lily?"

Lily turned her head, looking past the guests, and pointed her finger directly toward one of Dominic’s own elite security guards standing near the service corridor door.

"The man had the same gold pin as him," Lily said quietly.

Dominic slowly stood up, his white suit pristine under the chandelier light, as he turned his terrifying gaze directly toward his own trusted bodyguard.
