Chapter 2 - the shadow on the lapel

The silence inside the grand ballroom was so dense it felt heavy enough to crush a man. Every eye in the room shifted from the small three-year-old girl to the muscular security guard standing rigidly by the service door.
The guard, a man named Victor who had served on Dominic’s personal perimeter team for four years, went completely rigid. His hand hovered an inch above his sidearm, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy double doors that had just been locked from the outside by Dominic’s elite enforcers.
"Victor," Dominic spoke, his deep voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying the crushing authority of a death sentence. "Step forward."
Victor swallowed hard, his face pale under the bright crystal lighting. He took two hesitation-filled steps onto the polished marble, his boots clicking softly against the floor.
"Boss, you can't listen to a three-year-old," Victor pleaded, his voice quivering slightly despite his broad, tough build. "She’s a child! She saw a waiter in a suit and got confused! I've been on your detail for four years! I would die for young Ethan!"
Dr. Harris stood up, carefully closing his compact silver medical kit. "The chemical compound on that frosting is an advanced synthetic neurotoxin, Dominic. It works in less than sixty seconds and leaves zero trace in standard toxicology panels after two hours. This wasn't a clumsy attempt. This was military-grade execution."
Dominic didn't look at Dr. Harris. His dark, piercing eyes remained locked onto Victor's lapel. There, pinned neatly onto the black fabric of Victor's suit jacket, was a small, custom-cast gold lapel pin depicting a crest with a coiled viper—the private mark awarded only to Dominic’s inner council guards.
Dominic turned back down toward little Lily, who was still holding her mother's pale-blue apron skirt tight in her tiny hands.
"Lily," Dominic asked, his tone dropping into that surprisingly soft, steady cadence he reserved only for the innocent. "Did the man who touched the cake look like Victor, or was he wearing his pin?"
Lily looked closely at Victor, then shook her curly head. "No. The man was taller. He had a red mark on his hand like a burning stove. But he took that shiny gold button off his coat and put it in his pocket right before he walked into the kitchen."
Victor’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror.
Before Victor could make a move toward his concealed sidearm, two of Dominic’s top enforcers stepped up behind him. In one swift, brutal motion, they pinned Victor’s arms behind his back, disarming him and forcing him to his knees on the cold marble floor.
Dominic reached down, taking the gold viper pin from Victor’s lapel. He held it up to the light, turning the delicate metal piece in his broad, tattooed fingers.
"Search his locker, his vehicle, and his quarters," Dominic ordered his head of security flatly. "And bring me every waiter who passed through the kitchen corridor in the last thirty minutes."

Dominic then looked over at Lily’s mother, who was trembling, holding Lily close to her chest as if expecting retaliation from the guard's potential accomplices in the room.
"Take Ethan and Lily to the third-floor private suite," Dominic instructed the head housekeeper gently. "The house is on total lockdown. No one leaves this estate tonight."
