Chapter 9 - the silver locket

Two weeks later, the spring sun bathed the estate's private cliffside gardens in brilliant golden light.
Ethan and Lily were running across the manicured green lawn, chasing a small golden retriever puppy Dominic had bought for Ethan's birthday makeup celebration. Lily’s bright laughter echoed through the warm breeze, her yellow dress fluttering as she ran.
Dominic sat at a wrought-iron garden table, enjoying a fresh cup of espresso. Beside him sat Clare, looking radiant in a lavender summer dress, her brown hair falling loosely around her shoulders.
Vincent walked down the stone garden path, carrying a small velvet box retrieved from Marcus Moretti’s private estate vault in Philadelphia.
"This was recovered during the asset liquidation, Boss," Vincent said, setting the box on the table before bowing respectfully and walking back toward the house.
Dominic picked up the velvet box, opening the latch. Inside rested a antique silver locket attached to a delicate platinum chain.
Clare gasped softly, her eyes widening in pure shock. She reached out with trembling fingers, touching the intricate floral engraving on the silver cover.
"My grandmother's locket..." Clare whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "This was stolen from my mother's home in Chicago twenty years ago! How did Marcus have this?"
Dominic took the locket, carefully pressing the tiny spring mechanism on the side. The locket popped open, revealing two microscopic black-and-white photographs inside.
On the left was a picture of Clare's grandmother as a young woman. On the right was a picture of Dominic’s late mother, holding a infant in her arms.
Clare looked up at Dominic in utter astonishment. "Dominic... what does this mean?"
Dominic looked from the photograph directly into Clare’s eyes, a look of profound, breathtaking revelation settling over his rugged face.
"Your grandmother and my mother were sisters, Clare," Dominic revealed softly. "Thirty years ago, when the family split during the eastern syndicate war, your grandmother was hidden away in Chicago to protect the bloodline. Marcus didn't just target Ethan... he knew who you were all along. He was trying to erase the last legitimate branch of our family tree so he could claim sole control of the estate."
Clare covered her mouth with both hands, soft tears of relief and awe flowing down her face.

Dominic reached out, gently putting the platinum chain around her neck, securing the silver locket over her heart.
"You aren't an outsider who happened to work here, Clare," Dominic said, pulling her close into his arms. "You were meant to come home."
