Chapter 3 - the third-floor sanctuary

The third floor of the Moretti mansion was a private fortress hidden behind high-grade steel doors and biometric locks. Unlike the cold, grand marble of the lower ballrooms, this suite was warm, lined with mahogany paneling, plush Persian rugs, and deep leather sofas facing a massive stone fireplace.

Lily’s mother sat on the edge of a velvet couch, holding a cup of warm tea that her hands were still too shaken to drink properly.

Eight-year-old Ethan sat on the rug nearby, playing a quiet game of chess with little Lily. Despite being five years older, Ethan treated the little three-year-old girl with incredible patience and sweetness, carefully explaining how the wooden knights and rovers moved across the board.

"Thank you, Lily," Ethan said softly, looking over at her bright yellow dress. "You saved my life tonight."

Lily smiled, her curly hair bouncing as she picked up a wooden chess piece. "The bad man was mean. He didn't say happy birthday."

The heavy steel door of the suite clicked, and the electronic lock hummed as it disengaged.

Dominic Moretti stepped into the room. He had discarded his white suit jacket, wearing only his open-collar white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his thick, tattooed forearms. Despite walking with his usual terrifying composure, his dark eyes carried a storm of exhaustion and cold, calculating anger.

Lily’s mother stood up immediately, smoothing her pale-blue maid uniform. "Mr. Moretti... is the house secure?"

"It is," Dominic answered smoothly, walking over to stand near the stone fireplace. He looked down at his son Ethan, relief flashing briefly across his hardened features before he looked over at the head housekeeper. "Victor did not act alone. We found three hundred thousand dollars in unrecorded bearer bonds inside his private safe."

Lily’s mother gasped softly, hand over her mouth. "Who gave them to him?"

"The bonds were issued through a shell corporation linked to the Chicago Syndicate," Dominic revealed, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "They wanted to strike at me by taking Ethan... expecting the family to fracture from grief so they could claim our shipping routes along the coast."

Dominic turned his gaze to little Lily. He walked across the Persian rug and crouched down in front of the little girl, resting his large hands over his knees.

"You have sharp eyes, little one," Dominic said quietly. "Most adults in that ballroom were too busy drinking champagne to notice a man in the service hall."

Lily looked up at the feared Mafia boss with total fearless curiosity. "He smelled funny too. Like sour medicine."

Dominic’s sharp eyes narrowed slightly. He looked up at Lily’s mother. "Sour medicine?"

"Doctor's cleaning alcohol," Lily’s mother realized, her eyes widening in realization. "The antiseptic swab Dr. Harris uses in his kit!"

Dominic stood up slowly, his expression transforming into something dark, sharp, and terrifyingly clear.
