Chapter 10 - the threshold of sixteen

Four months later, the Moretti mansion was decorated in brilliant white roses and golden banners for the grand celebration of Dominic and Clare’s wedding.
The finest figures from across the state gathered in the grand ballroom, cheering as Dominic, dressed in a sharp white tuxedo, stood beside Clare, who looked breathtaking in a flowing white lace gown.
Beside them stood eight-year-old Ethan in his navy suit and three-year-old Lily in her bright yellow party dress, her pink shoes clicking happily against the marble as she held her mother's gown train.
Later that evening, as the stars shone brightly over the ocean cliffs, Dominic led Clare, Ethan, and Lily down to the mansion's central vault wing.
They stood before a massive, antique steel vault door embedded deep in the stone foundation, marked with sixteen gold combination dials.
"This vault belonged to my grandfather," Dominic explained, looking down at his new family. "It holds the original land deeds and founding charters of our family's European estates. But it was locked thirty years ago when the family split, requiring sixteen specific numerical keys that were lost when your grandmother vanished."
Clare looked down at the silver locket resting against her white dress. She turned the silver casing over, noticing sixteen microscopic numbers engraved inside the inner rim: 08-14-22-05...
"The keys are in the locket," Clare said softly.
Dominic took the locket, carefully dialing the sixteen numbers into the heavy gold mechanisms one by one.
CLICK! CLANG!
With a heavy, mechanical hum, the multi-ton steel vault door slowly swung open, revealing a breathtaking, marble-lined hall filled with historical treasures, ancient gold coins, and preserved family documents.
In the center of the hall rested an ornate marble pedestal holding a velvet-lined display box. Inside lay an official decree stamped with double gold seals.
Dominic picked up the decree, reading the opening lines under the soft gallery lighting. His dark eyes widened in genuine, profound surprise.
"Dominic? What is it?" Clare asked, leaning against his arm.
Dominic looked down at little three-year-old Lily, who was happily admiring a gleaming silver cup on a nearby display shelf.
"This charter doesn't just grant control of the American shipping routes," Dominic revealed, a warm, incredible smile spreading across his rugged face. "It states that the sixteen original European estates in Italy and France are tied directly to the firstborn female of the primary bloodline... which means three-year-old Lily is the rightful owner of our entire global legacy."

Clare gasped in pure delight, laughing as Dominic reached down and lifted little Lily into his broad, strong arms, holding her high against his chest as Ethan clapped happily beside them.
Dominic looked out at his family, his dark eyes filled with absolute love and peace... knowing that their story had only just opened its greatest chapter...
