Chapter 10 - Tides of Boston Harbor

The morning sun rose bright and golden over Boston Harbor, casting a warm, cinematic light across the sprawling waterfront estate. The crisp ocean breeze carried the clean scent of salt and pine, blowing away the lingering shadows of the previous night.
In the sun-drenched breakfast room overlooking the manicured gardens, Mrs. Duca—Lorenzo’s recovering mother—sat in a comfortable armchair. She was a dignified, silver-haired woman whose eyes were clear, bright, and alert for the first time in months, free from the heavy fog of the altered medication.
Sitting on the rug beside her was little Mia Hayes.
The three-year-old girl wore a fresh, pale-yellow floral dress, her bright blue eyes sparkling as she held her cream stuffed rabbit. Mrs. Duca smiled warmly, leaning down to hand Mia a small strawberry from her breakfast plate. Mia giggled happily, taking the fruit with tiny, polite fingers.
Standing near the sunroom entrance was Elena Hayes. She looked rested, her pale, rosy skin glowing in the morning light, her dark-brown hair styled neatly. She wore her clean black housekeeper dress, but her shoulders were relaxed, free from the suffocating anxiety that had weighed on her for ninety days.
The heavy glass doors opened, and Lorenzo stepped into the room.
He had traded his formal tuxedo for a comfortable, tailored navy sweater and dark trousers, though his commanding, masculine presence remained as potent as ever. His thick dark-brown hair was slightly relaxed, and his gray eyes held a soft, profound warmth as he looked at the scene before him.
"Good morning, Mother," Lorenzo said, walking over to kiss his mother’s cheek.
"Good morning, my son," Mrs. Duca smiled, holding his hand gently. "I feel wonderful today, Lorenzo. Truly wonderful. And little Mia has been keeping me company."
Lorenzo dropped down to one knee on the rug beside Mia. The three-year-old girl immediately let go of her rabbit, reaching out her tiny hand to wrap her fingers around Lorenzo’s pinky finger—the exact same gesture she had used twenty-four hours earlier to lead him down the hallway.
"Is the red lady gone, Mr. Lorenzo?" Mia asked softly, her innocent voice clear and happy.
Lorenzo looked into her bright blue eyes, offering a warm, genuine smile that softened his rugged features.
"The red lady is gone, Mia," Lorenzo promised softly, squeezing her tiny hand gently. "She is never, ever coming back."
Mia let out a happy little sigh and hugged her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Lorenzo stood up, his tall frame catching the morning sunlight. He turned his gaze toward Elena, who was watching him with deep, unspoken gratitude.
"Elena," Lorenzo said, his deep American accent smooth and respectful. "My mother tells me she wants you to oversee the entire estate staff moving forward. A full promotion to head manager of the household. Starting today."
Elena’s eyes widened in surprise, her hands coming together over her apron. "Mr. Duca... that is too much. I am happy just serving your family."
"You earned it, Elena," Mrs. Duca chimed in warmly from her chair. "You protected this family when others tried to destroy it. This home belongs to people with loyalty and heart."
Elena looked at Lorenzo, her delicate features flushing with a warm, rosy glow. "Thank you, Lorenzo. For everything."
Lorenzo bowed his head slightly, a quiet understanding passing between them—a bond forged in trauma and sealed with absolute trust.
At that moment, the sunroom doors opened again, and Rocco Bennett stepped inside. His face was calm, but his disciplined expression carried the subtle tension of a man who knew the world outside the estate gates never truly stopped moving.
Rocco approached Lorenzo, offering a respectful nod to Mrs. Duca and Elena, before leaning in close to Lorenzo’s ear.
"Boss," Rocco whispered quietly. "We just received an encrypted transmission from Chicago. Victor Moretti just heard about Vivien's arrest. He’s calling an emergency meeting of the Eastern Commission for tomorrow night."
Lorenzo’s gray eyes narrowed, the deadly, calculating Mafia boss instantly returning beneath the calm surface. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the open waters of the harbor, where the distant skyline of Boston gleamed in the sunlight.
The threat inside his home had been crushed, his family was safe, and the innocent were protected. But beyond the iron gates of his fortress, the storm was already gathering.

Lorenzo adjusted the luxury platinum watch on his wrist, a cold, confident smile touching his lips.
"Let them call the meeting, Rocco," Lorenzo said smoothly, his voice carrying the absolute, unshakeable authority of the king of Boston. "Tell Moretti I’ll be attending in person."
