Chapter 3 - The Three-Month Reckoning

The heavy mahogany doors of Lorenzo Duca’s private study swung open silently and closed with a solid, absolute click. The room was a sanctuary of dark leather, high bookcases, and sweeping glass windows that looked out over the gray, rolling waters of Boston Harbor. It was a space where multi-million-dollar decisions were made and where the fate of rival factions was quietly sealed.

Lorenzo walked over to his massive executive desk. He did not set Mia down on a chair; instead, he gently lifted the little girl and placed her on the very edge of the polished mahogany desk, bringing her eye-level with him.

"Mia," Lorenzo said softly, his voice dropping into a deep, comforting cadence. He reached out and gently smoothed down the large yellow bow tied in her light-brown curls. "Look at me, little one."

Mia looked up, her bright blue eyes wide and rimmed with unshed tears. She held her cream stuffed rabbit so tightly against her pale-yellow floral dress that its worn ears were completely crushed.

Lorenzo reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a clean, white linen handkerchief. He gently wiped a single tear that had escaped down her rosy cheek.

"You were very brave to bring me down that hallway," Lorenzo said, his gray eyes searching her small face with a profound, fatherly tenderness that very few people in the world had ever seen. "You saved your mother from making a very difficult choice. Do you understand that?"

Mia sniffled, nodding her head slowly. "The red lady is mean to Mommy," she whispered, her voice tiny in the vast room. "She shouts when you go away in the big black car."

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened, the light stubble on his face highlighting the rigid contours of his expression. He rested his large hands on the edge of the desk, leaning in slightly.

"I need to ask you something, Mia," Lorenzo said smoothly, keeping his tone calm and unhurried. "How long has the red lady been saying these mean things to your mommy? How long has she been making you afraid?"

Mia blinked her bright blue eyes. She set her stuffed rabbit down on the desk for a brief second. Slowly, deliberately, the three-year-old girl held up her tiny right hand.

She extended her thumb. Then her index finger. Then her middle finger.

Three tiny fingers held stiffly in the air.

Lorenzo stared at those three small fingers. A cold, heavy weight settled in his stomach, quickly followed by an inferno of pure rage.

Three months.

Vivien Sterling had been living in his estate for ninety days. For ninety days, while Lorenzo was managing his syndicate, protecting his empire, and overseeing his recovering mother's medical care, his fiancée had been systematically tormenting his loyal housekeeper and terrorizing a three-year-old child. Three months of quiet abuse happening directly under his nose, masked by Vivien’s fake smiles, her elegant dresses, and her performative affection whenever Lorenzo was nearby.

Lorenzo closed his eyes for a single second, taking a slow, deep breath to bury the rage beneath a layer of ice. When he opened his eyes, his gray gaze was clear, sharp, and utterly lethal.

He gently folded Mia’s tiny fingers back down and cupped her hand in his.

"Thank you, Mia," Lorenzo whispered softly. "You don't ever have to be afraid of the red lady again. Do you hear me? I am going to handle this. No one is ever going to threaten you or your mommy in this house again."

"Promise?" Mia asked softly, her blue eyes searching his.

"I give you my word," Lorenzo stated firmly.

At that moment, the discreet side door of the study opened. Rocco Bennett stepped into the room. At forty-five, Rocco was Lorenzo’s most trusted lieutenant—a tall, athletic man with short dark hair, a disciplined expression, and a dark suit that fit his sharp, military-like posture. Rocco took one look at Lorenzo’s face, then at the little girl sitting on the executive desk, and immediately recognized the atmosphere in the room.

"Boss," Rocco said, his low, disciplined voice cutting through the quiet. "You called for me?"

May you like

Lorenzo stood up to his full, intimidating height, smoothing down his navy suit jacket. He looked at Rocco, his gray eyes transmitting a message that needed very few words.

"Rocco," Lorenzo said, his voice flat, icy, and completely devoid of mercy. "We have a infection in this house. And I want it removed root and stem."
