Chapter 4 - The Gathering Net

Rocco Bennett did not ask unnecessary questions. He had served alongside Lorenzo Duca for nearly two decades, transitioning from the violent streets of South Boston to the high-stakes boardrooms and fortified estates of Lorenzo’s current empire. He knew the precise tone of voice Lorenzo used when a business rival had crossed a line, and he knew the far more dangerous, quiet register Lorenzo used when someone had threatened his inner circle.
Lorenzo reached across his desk, pulled a silver framed photograph of Vivien Sterling from the corner, and slid it across the polished mahogany. It came to a stop directly in front of Rocco.
"I want a complete, uncompromising audit of Vivien Sterling," Lorenzo commanded, his deep voice filling the quiet study. "Every bank account, every private communication, every visitor she has received at the gates, and every phone call she has made since she stepped foot into this estate three months ago."
Rocco picked up the photograph, his disciplined face remaining entirely stoic. "Understood, Boss. Are we looking for something specific?"
"Everything," Lorenzo replied, stepping around the desk to pick up Mia, holding her comfortably against his hip. "Look at the estate’s internal surveillance logs. Specifically, the corridor outside my mother’s suite and the servants' quarters. Check if any footage has been deleted, altered, or overwritten in the last ninety days."
Rocco’s eyes sharpened. "If someone altered internal security files, it means someone on our security detail helped her."
"Exactly," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave. "Find out who she bribed. Find out where her money is coming from, and find out what she has been doing when I am not in the house. I want a full dossier on my desk before the sun sets tomorrow."
"I’ll pull the archive drives personally," Rocco said, bowing his head slightly. "It will be done quietly, Boss. No one on the estate staff will know I'm digging."
"Good. Send Elena up to my private quarters to get Mia," Lorenzo added, his tone softening slightly as he looked at the child in his arms. "And Rocco—make sure Elena knows she is entirely safe. Tell her to stay in the family wing for the rest of the evening."
"Right away, Boss," Rocco bowed and exited the study, closing the heavy doors behind him.
Two hours later, the grand waterfront estate had transitioned into its evening routine. The sun was setting over Boston Harbor, painting the sky in deep shades of orange, violet, and bruised blue. The chandeliers throughout the main foyer flickered to life, casting a warm, cinematic glow across the marble staircases and towering oil paintings.
At six o'clock, Vivien Sterling descended the grand staircase.
She was a vision of high-society elegance. Her dramatic deep-red satin gown rustled softly against the marble steps, the heavy fabric catching the warm light of the chandeliers. Her carefully styled blonde hair was immaculate, her diamond earrings sparkled with every subtle tilt of her head, and her large engagement ring glinted prominently on her left hand. She carried herself with the supreme, unshakeable confidence of a woman who believed she had successfully asserted her dominance over the household.
Standing at the base of the staircase was Lorenzo.
He looked magnificent in his tailored dark navy suit, his fitted black shirt open slightly at the collar, his thick dark-brown hair swept back. His face was an absolute mask of calm, calculated politeness. There was not a single trace of the rage that had burned inside him two hours earlier.
As Vivien reached the bottom step, she offered him a radiant, practiced smile—the smile of a loving, devoted fiancée.
"Lorenzo, darling," Vivien purred, extending her left hand toward him, ensuring the diamond ring was fully visible. "I didn't hear your car pull up. How were your meetings in the city?"
Lorenzo stepped forward. His expression remained utterly smooth as he reached out and took her manicured hand in his. He leaned down slightly, his light stubble brushing against her fair skin as he calmly kissed the back of her hand, right beside the massive diamond ring.

"The meetings were productive, Vivien," Lorenzo replied, his gray eyes lifting to meet hers, completely unreadable. "Everything is falling into place exactly as it should."
Vivien smiled, completely unaware that the net was already closing around her neck.
