Chapter 6 - Poison in the Silken Cup

The silence inside the private library was absolute, broken only by the steady drumming of rain against the glass. Lorenzo stared down at the surveillance photograph. The infrared image clearly captured Vivien’s face, tight with desperation, as she handed a thick manila folder to Julian Vane.

"She was selling him the estate's floor plans," Lorenzo stated, his voice dangerously quiet. "The shift rotations. The panic room locations."

"And your mother's medical schedule," Rocco added, pulling a second document from the binder. "We cross-referenced the dates of Vivien's late-night meetings with the medical logs from Mrs. Duca’s private physician. Every time Vivien met with Vane, your mother suffered a 'relapse' the following morning. Confusion, extreme fatigue, memory loss."

Lorenzo’s gray eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying rage. The ink near his collar seemed to pulse against his fair skin.

"Is my mother being poisoned?" Lorenzo growled, the words vibrating in his broad chest.

"We had Dr. Mercer quietly test your mother’s evening tea two hours ago," Rocco replied, his voice heavy with grim confirmation. "They’ve been lacing her sedatives with a low-grade neurological suppressant. It doesn't leave permanent damage if stopped, but it causes severe confusion and disorientation. It made your mother appear mentally unfit to manage her own trust—a trust that requires her signature to transfer the estate’s land deeds."

Lorenzo walked slowly over to the mahogany desk, resting his hands flat on the polished surface. The pieces of the puzzle had fit together into a picture of absolute, unforgivable treachery.

Vivien hadn't just come to Boston for money. She had partnered with Julian Vane to dismantle Lorenzo’s family from the inside out. By threatening Elena and Mia, she ensured no servant would dare speak about her cruelty. By drugging Lorenzo’s recovering mother, she manufactured the appearance of a dying matriarch who desperately needed a woman like Vivien to take over the household. And once married to Lorenzo, with land deeds signed over, Vane’s faction would have had full structural access to Lorenzo’s entire empire.

"Where is Frankie Vance right now?" Lorenzo asked, his tone dropping into an icy register.

"He's on duty at the main gate house," Rocco answered. "He thinks his shift ends at midnight."

"Detain him quietly," Lorenzo commanded. "Take him to the boathouse basement. Do not let him speak to anyone, and do not let Vivien know he has been compromised."

"Understood," Rocco bowed. "And what about Julian Vane?"

Lorenzo raised his head, his dark-brown hair caught in the warm lamp light, his gray eyes locking onto Rocco’s with absolute, predatory focus.

"Vivien promised Vane that she would deliver the signed land deeds tomorrow night," Lorenzo said, a dark, cold smile touching the edge of his lips. "She told Elena to lie and say my mother gave her blessing. Vivien is planning a formal announcement during our private family dinner tomorrow evening."

"Shall I cancel the dinner, Boss?" Rocco asked.

"No," Lorenzo replied softly, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of a man preparing an execution. "Tell the kitchen to prepare the finest meal this estate has ever served. Invite Vivien's family from New York. Invite her legal representatives. And send a private, encrypted invitation to Julian Vane. Tell him Vivien has the documents ready for handoff."

Rocco’s eyes widened slightly, understanding the sheer brilliance of the trap. "You're going to catch them all in the same room."

"I am going to destroy them in front of everyone they tried to rob," Lorenzo stated coldly. "Now go get Elena. I want to speak with her."
