Chapter 7 - The Shield Around the Innocent

Ten minutes later, a soft knock sounded at the library door.

Elena Hayes stepped quietly into the room. She had changed out of her work apron, though she still wore her neat black housekeeper dress. Her dark-brown hair was slightly loosened from its practical bun, framing her delicate, pale features. Her eyes were red-rimmed and tired, filled with an anxious caution as she stepped onto the thick Persian rug.

"You asked to see me, Mr. Duca?" Elena asked softly, her voice respectful and guarded.

Lorenzo walked around his desk, stepping out into the warm light of the library lamp. His intimidating, broad-shouldered frame was relaxed, his posture projecting absolute safety rather than authority.

"Sit down, Elena," Lorenzo said gently, gesturing toward one of the large leather armchairs by the fireplace.

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second before taking a seat on the edge of the cushion, keeping her hands folded neatly in her lap.

Lorenzo pulled up a matching chair and sat opposite her, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, bringing himself closer to her level.

"First," Lorenzo began, his deep American accent smooth and firm, "I want to apologize to you, Elena."

Elena blinked in genuine surprise, her delicate features softening. "Apologize to me, sir? For what?"

"For allowing a predator to walk through the halls of my home for three months," Lorenzo said, his gray eyes filled with a heavy, sincere regret. "I built this estate to be a fortress. A place where my mother, my staff, and those under my protection could live without fear. I failed to see what was happening right in front of me."

Elena swallowed hard, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "You didn't fail, Mr. Moretti—Mr. Duca. She was very careful. She only spoke to me when you were in the city or in meetings. She knew exactly where the guards were."

"I know," Lorenzo said softly. "Mia brought me to your door this afternoon, Elena. I heard everything Vivien said to you. I heard her threaten your job, your reputation, and I heard her threaten your daughter."

Elena gasped softly, covering her mouth with a trembling hand as a tear finally spilled down her rosy cheek. The immense, suffocating weight she had been carrying for ninety days suddenly dissolved, leaving her breathless.

"I refused to lie to her, sir," Elena whispered, her voice shaking with quiet pride. "Your mother has been so kind to me and Mia. She treats my daughter like her own grandchild. I couldn't let Ms. Sterling use her."

"I know you didn't," Lorenzo said, his voice thick with profound respect. "You showed more bravery in that room than half the men I employ. You stood up to a dangerous woman to protect my family's honor, even when you thought it might cost you everything."

Lorenzo reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a small black leather wallet, and set a brass key on the small table between them.

"Starting tonight," Lorenzo instructed, "you and Mia are moving out of the staff quarters. You will occupy the guest suite in the west wing, right next to my mother's apartments. Rocco has posted two of his most trusted men at the entrance to that corridor. No one enters that wing without my personal permission."

Elena stared at the key, her eyes wide with shock. "Mr. Duca... the west wing is for family. I am just a housekeeper."

"You are a woman who protected my mother and proved her loyalty," Lorenzo corrected her firmly, his gray eyes burning with unyielding conviction. "As long as you and Mia live under this roof, you are under my personal protection. No one will ever threaten you again, Elena. I give you my word as a Duca."

Elena looked up at the towering Mafia boss, tears streaming down her face, but for the first time in months, her eyes were free of fear.

"Thank you, Lorenzo," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

Lorenzo offered a rare, genuine smile, nodding slowly. "Go back to your daughter, Elena. Get some rest. Tomorrow evening, the theater ends."
