Chapter 2 - Shadows Behind the Door

The air inside the grand waterfront estate seemed to freeze, heavy with an unspoken violence that had not yet exploded. Through the crack in the bedroom door, Lorenzo watched his fiancée take another step toward the young housekeeper. The contrast between them was striking—Vivien in her theatrical, deep-red satin gown, radiating artificial authority, and Elena in her simple black housekeeper dress, backed only by her quiet integrity.
Vivien’s expression lost every trace of high-society elegance, degrading into pure, venomous spite. She leaned in until her face was inches from Elena’s.
"Let me clarify something for you, you arrogant little peasant," Vivien hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerous, muffled whisper. "You think Lorenzo cares about your integrity? You think he sees you as anything more than someone who vacuums his rugs and wipes his counters? I am the woman who is going to wear the Duca name. I am the woman who will control the family foundation, the estate, and every single person employed inside these gates."
Elena kept her chin up, refusing to let her voice tremble. "Mr. Duca is a fair man, Ms. Sterling. He values honesty above everything else."
"Lorenzo is a busy man who doesn't have time for the petty squabbles of staff," Vivien snapped, her eyes narrowing into cruel slits. "If you refuse to say what I tell you to say, I will make it my personal mission to see you destroyed. Do you have any idea how easy it would be for me to place a piece of my jewelry inside your quarters? A single diamond necklace found under your mattress, Elena. I can have you arrested before nightfall. I can make sure your name is blacklisted across every estate in Boston. You won't be able to find a job cleaning toilets in a bus station when I am finished with you."
Elena’s breath hitched slightly, the threat hitting the exact vulnerability Vivien intended. Without a job, without references, Elena would have no way to support her child. Yet, she maintained her quiet, dignified stance, her eyes flashing with a mother’s quiet strength.
"Mr. Duca knows I would never steal from him," Elena said softly.
"Would he risk his reputation for a maid?" Vivien mocked, a cruel smile spreading across her painted lips. She tilted her head, her diamond earrings sparkling in the afternoon sunlight, her large engagement ring catching the light like a weapon.
Then, Vivien’s eyes drifted toward the open door, looking out toward the hallway where she assumed no one was listening. A dark, terrifying expression settled over her features—an expression of pure, unadulterated malice.
"And remember, Elena," Vivien added, her voice dropping into a quiet, threadlike threat that sent a wave of ice through the hallway. "Accidents happen in a house this size. It's a very large property. The waterfront is steep. Gates get left open. Cameras fail. Terrible things happen to little girls who wander where they shouldn't."
In the hallway, Lorenzo’s hand, still resting near the floor, clenched into a massive, iron fist. The dark navy fabric of his suit stretched over his tensed shoulder muscles. The subtle tattoos along his collar seemed to darken as his pulse spiked—not with panic, but with a cold, terrifying, murderous fury.
Someone was threatening a child. Inside his home. Under his roof.
Mia, standing beside him in her pale-yellow dress, let out a tiny, breathless whimper. She instinctively pressed herself completely against Lorenzo’s chest, burying her small face into the black fabric of his shirt. Her little body shook with a silent, profound terror.
Lorenzo did not react with loud rage. He was a master of absolute emotional control. He reached up with his large, broad hand, gently cradling the back of Mia’s curly head, pressing her softly against his chest to muffle any sound she might make. He wrapped his arm around her tiny frame, lifting her effortlessly from the floor.

He looked through the crack one last time. Vivien was turning away from Elena, smoothing down the front of her red satin gown with absolute satisfaction, entirely convinced she had won the exchange. Elena stood by the bed, her shoulders trembling slightly, taking a deep, shuddering breath as she tried to compose herself for the sake of her daughter.
Lorenzo backed away from the door with complete silence, his polished black shoes making no sound against the thick runner rugs lining the corridor. Carrying the trembling three-year-old girl securely against his chest, the Mafia boss turned and walked toward his private wing, his gray eyes burning with a lethal promise.
