Chapter 2 - The Whispering Gallery

The grand dining room was so quiet that the patter of rain against the arched windows sounded like falling stone.
Vincent slowly stood up from his knee, his tall frame uncurling until he towered over the polished table once more. His eyes never left Rachel’s pale, trembling face.
"Clear the room," Vincent ordered quietly. He didn't yell, but the authority in his voice was absolute.
Richard Vale stood up from his chair, his charcoal suit unbuttoned, his face flushed with annoyance. "Vincent, this is ridiculous. We have a three-million-dollar waterfront deal to review with the captains. You're going to clear the table over a maid and her child?"
Standing by the service entrance, Marco Russo—Vincent’s forty-four-year-old head of security—stepped forward. Dressed in a fitted black suit with a discreet earpiece, Marco’s sharp eyes scanned the room with disciplined intensity.
"You heard the boss, Richard," Marco said softly, his deep voice carrying a quiet warning. "Out."
Richard glared at Marco, then at Rachel, before grabbing his leather portfolio and walking out of the room, followed by the remaining captains.
Once the heavy oak double doors clicked shut, only Vincent, Marco, Rachel, and little Emma remained in the grand dining room.
Vincent walked slowly toward the stone fireplace. He reached out with a large, tattooed hand and picked up the silver-framed photograph from the mantelpiece. He looked at the faded color image of himself thirty years ago, standing on the lawn of his old estate beside a four-year-old girl with dark wavy hair and a pink ribbon.
"Where did you get this photograph, Rachel?" Vincent asked softly, his back still turned to her.
Rachel swallowed hard, pulling Emma against her pale-blue dress. "It... it belonged to my mother, Mr. Caruso. She kept it in a wooden box inside her dresser until the day she passed away."
Vincent turned around slowly, holding the frame against his chest. "What was your mother's name?"
"Clara," Rachel whispered, her voice shaking. "Clara Dawson."
Vincent’s breathing stopped for a fraction of a second. His piercing blue eyes flared with a sudden, overwhelming emotion that made his hands tremble once more.
"Clara wasn't her real name," Vincent said softly.
Rachel looked at him in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Before Vincent could answer, Marco stepped closer to his boss, checking the encrypted monitor on his wristwatch. "Boss, Richard Vale just logged into the internal security server from his vehicle in the driveway. He’s running a background search on Rachel’s employment file."
Vincent’s expression hardened instantly, the warmth in his eyes turning into cold stone. "He knows something."
Vincent looked down at Emma, who was leaning against her mother's leg, clutching her worn stuffed rabbit.
"Marco," Vincent commanded softly. "Move Rachel and Emma into the master suite on the third floor. Double the perimeter guard. Nobody enters that wing without my personal clearance."
Rachel gasped, her hands grasping Emma’s shoulders. "Mr. Caruso, please! What is happening? Am I in trouble?"

Vincent walked up to Rachel, looking down into her dark-brown eyes with a gentle, profound respect she had never seen from him before.
"You're not in trouble, Rachel," Vincent whispered. "You are home."
