Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Corridor

The morning sun rose over New York, casting long golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate.
Down on the second floor, the executive wing was unusually tense. Security guards stood at every corner, their earpieces humming with encrypted radio traffic.
Inside Vincent’s private study, Marco stood near the desk, reviewing digital surveillance logs on a tablet screen.
Vincent sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, wearing a fresh black shirt and tailored trousers. Beside him sat Rachel, wearing a simple, elegant dark-blue silk dress that the estate staff had brought for her, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders. Little Emma sat in a large leather chair, happily eating pancakes off a silver plate.
"What did you find, Marco?" Vincent asked, his baritone voice low and lethal.
"Richard Vale didn't just search Rachel’s employment file last night, Boss," Marco reported grimly. "He accessed the family's offshore trust ledgers in Switzerland. He’s been transferring three million dollars a month out of the Caruso foundation for six years."
Rachel’s eyes widened in shock. "Three million a month?"
"He used your mother's disappearance as a legal loophole," Vincent explained, his jaw setting into a hard line beneath his beard. "When Clara vanished, thirty percent of the family trust was placed into an escrow account pending her return. Richard’s father forged secondary power-of-attorney documents, allowing Richard to siphon those funds under the guise of 'estate maintenance'."
"And now that Rachel is back," Marco added, "Richard knows his fraud will be exposed the second she files a legal claim to her mother's inheritance."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open.
Richard Vale walked into the room, flanked by two senior syndicate captains. Dressed in his dark charcoal suit, Richard carried an air of desperate, aggressive arrogance.
"Vincent!" Richard thundered, pointing a finger toward Rachel. "I want this woman and her child removed from the estate immediately! The board of directors is demanding an emergency audit of the third-floor suite!"
Vincent didn't flinch. He slowly stood up from his leather chair, towering over the desk, his piercing blue eyes locking onto Richard with cold, terrifying authority.
"The board of directors works for me, Richard," Vincent said softly. "And this woman isn't a housemaid anymore."
Richard sneered, stepping closer to the desk. "Are you really going to trust an forged journal and a maid's story over your senior business partner of twenty years?"
Little Emma set her fork down on her silver plate. She stood up on her leather chair, pointed her small finger directly at Richard, and shouted:
"You're a bad man! You made my mommy's wrist red!"

Richard glared down at the four-year-old child, his face flushing red with anger. "Shut your mouth, you little—"
Before Richard could finish his sentence, Vincent moved with blinding speed. He cleared the length of his desk in a single stride, grabbing Richard by his charcoal suit collar and slamming him violently against the wall.
