Chapter 1 - the elevator was lying

The subterranean sublevels of the Black Crown Casino Hotel smelled of heavy oil, cold concrete, and old copper wiring. Beneath the dazzling neon lights, gold leaf ceilings, and rolling roulette wheels of Roman Black's underground empire, the mechanical room was a dark labyrinth of humming generators, high-voltage conduits, and thick iron cables.
Six-year-old Evan Collins sat on a wooden crate near the primary elevator shaft assembly, his small hands resting over his knees. Dressed in a neat navy suit jacket, white shirt, dark trousers, and clean sneakers, the unusually observant boy tilted his head. His bright, intelligent eyes tracked the mechanical pulsing of the main counterweights. Evan was fascinated by machinery. While other children played with plastic cars, Evan memorized the rhythmic clinks, hums, and pneumatic bursts of the building's internal systems.
Suddenly, a sharp, horrific screech of tearing metal reverberated down the concrete shaft. It wasn't the standard friction of brake shoes against iron. It was the high-pitched, grinding scream of a primary steel cable snapping under unnatural stress.
Evan jumped up. His ears caught a secondary sound—a muffled, heavy metallic thud dropping rapidly from above.
"Something’s falling," Evan whispered, his small voice echoing off the damp concrete walls.
Without a second of hesitation, the six-year-old sprinted toward the wall-mounted emergency override casing. He reached up, grabbed a heavy brass fire extinguisher resting in a metal corner bracket, and slammed the heavy iron base straight through the glass panel. Glass shattered across the floor in a shimmering shower. Evan thrust his small hand into the exposed box and slammed his palm onto the large red recall button.
High above, inside the private glass-panel executive elevator ascending toward the penthouse, Roman Black stood framed against the glittering skyline of the city. Tall, muscular, ruggedly handsome, and frighteningly calm, the feared billionaire Mafia boss was an intimidating presence in his perfectly tailored black suit, open-collar black shirt, and luxury wristwatch. Dark hair, light stubble, and razor-sharp features gave him the look of a ruler who commanded entire cities with a whisper. Two tall, muscular bodyguards in crisp black suits stood behind him, their hands folded at their waistline.
Without warning, the elevator shuddered violently. A deafening metallic screech exploded from the roof as the emergency friction brakes violently seized the guide rails. The cabin threw Roman and his guards sideways against the reinforced glass.
Down in the dark abyss of the shaft, a two-ton counterweight assembly plunged past the elevator frame, crashing heavily into the pit far below.
Roman straightened himself in a fraction of a second, his dark eyes burning with lethal precision as his bodyguards immediately drew their sidearms, forming a wall in front of him.
"What the hell was that?" Roman demanded, his deep, rumbling voice slicing through the ringing alarms.
Down in the mechanical room, Meera Collins rushed through the heavy steel door, her heart hammering against her ribs. Dressed in her neat black-and-white hotel maid uniform, her dark brown hair falling from its loose bun around her fair, rosy face, the exhausted single mother dropped to her knees and threw her arms around her crying son beside the shattered emergency box.
"Evan! Baby, what happened?" Meera cried, hugging his small frame tightly against her chest.
Before Evan could answer, the heavy steel door slammed open. Trent Lawson, the night manager of the Black Crown, stepped into the room. Polished, controlling, and calculating in an expensive charcoal suit, white shirt, and black tie, Trent was accompanied by two tall, unfamiliar men dressed in plain dark tactical coats.
Trent walked directly toward Meera and Evan, his face cold and devoid of any managerial concern.
"Your son is coming with us," Trent said flatly, pointing a finger toward the boy.
One of the unfamiliar men reached out a large, heavy hand to grab Evan's arm. Meera’s protective instincts flared into absolute fire. She stood up instantly, stepping directly between the giant man and her six-year-old son, violently smacking the man's hand away with a loud smack.
"You’re not touching my son!" Meera roared, her brown eyes blazing with fierce, maternal rage.
"Stand down, Meera," Trent snapped, his voice dropping into a dangerous threat. "You're a maid. You don't know what you just interfered with."
"He's a child!" Meera shouted, shielding Evan behind her skirt.
"Silence!" a thunderous, authoritative voice echoed down the concrete corridor.
Everyone froze.
Roman Black walked into the mechanical room. His two bodyguards flanked him, weapons held at low ready. Roman’s presence was like a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure; the very room seemed to shrink around his massive, broad-shouldered frame. His dark eyes swept over the shattered glass, the compressed emergency recall button, the terrified maid, and the small boy standing in a navy suit.
Roman stopped three feet away, looking down at Evan with intense curiosity.
"You pressed the recall?" Roman asked softly, his deep voice carrying an undeniable weight.
Evan looked up at the legendary Mafia boss without flinching. Then, the six-year-old looked past Roman, turning his small, pale finger to point directly at Trent Lawson.

"The elevator was lying…" Evan said quietly, his voice crystal clear in the tense silence. "…but he already knew."
Trent’s face instantly drained of all color.
