Chapter 5 - the forty-floor secret

The private library on the seventy-fourth floor was a dark, impressive room filled with thousands of leather-bound volumes, deep velvet armchairs, and heavy mahogany desks.
The room service waiter—a pale, nervous man in his late twenties—was pinned against the wall by two of Roman’s largest bodyguards.
Roman stood before him, his black shirt sleeves rolled up to his broad forearms, revealing complex, dark tattoos stretching down his skin. His presence was so terrifying that the waiter was trembling violently, his knees buckling beneath him.
Meera sat in a deep armchair near the door, holding Evan close against her side. She didn't want Evan exposed to violence, but Roman had insisted they stay within his sight at all times.
"Who gave you the napkin?" Roman asked, his voice low, calm, and deadly.
"I... I don't know his name, Mr. Black!" the waiter whimpered, tears spilling down his pale face. "A man stopped me near the service elevator on the fortieth floor! He gave me a hundred dollars and told me to put that specific napkin in the bread basket for Suite 702!"
"What did he look like?" Roman demanded.
"He... he was wearing a navy suit! Expensive shoes! He had a silver signet ring on his pinky finger!"
Roman froze. His jaw tightened so hard the muscles along his cheek twitched.
A silver signet ring with an anchor design was a rare, custom piece of jewelry. Only three people in the state owned one—and one of them was standing inside this hotel.
"Julian," Roman muttered under his breath, his dark eyes burning with cold realization. "Julian didn't stay in Chicago. He’s been living on the fortieth floor of my own hotel for months."
"Mr. Black," Meera spoke up softly, her voice cutting through the intense atmosphere of the room. "The fortieth floor... that’s where the hotel's administrative record vaults are located. The floor has been closed for renovation for three months."
Roman turned to look at her, a look of grim appreciation in his eyes. "You know the layout of the forty-floor wing?"
"I used to clean the administrative offices down there before the renovations started," Meera explained, standing up. "There's a hidden service corridor behind the main linen storage that bypasses all the electronic card readers. If someone wanted to live down there without being seen on security cameras... that's where they would be."
Roman looked at the courageous maid standing before him. Not only had her son saved his life, but her quiet knowledge of the building's hidden corners was exposing every layer of the conspiracy against him.
"Marcus," Roman ordered, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a sleek black sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced speed. "Assemble Team Alpha. We're going down to the fortieth floor."
He turned to Meera, walking over to her. He reached out, his warm, calloused hand gently resting on her shoulder.
"You and Evan stay with Marcus’s secondary unit in the panic room behind the library," Roman said softly, his dark eyes searching hers. "I will handle this."
Meera looked up at the dangerous, powerful man, feeling a sudden, intense spike of fear—not for herself, but for him. She reached out, her small hand instinctively grasping his sleeve.

"Be careful, Roman," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.
Roman’s eyes flickered with intense emotion. He leaned down, his voice vibrating deep in his chest. "I always am, sweetheart."
