Chapter 7 - the mother's courage

By four in the morning, the operational threat on the fortieth floor had been completely cleared.
Inside the quiet, warm sanctuary of the penthouse library, Meera sat on the plush sofa, holding a sleeping Evan in her lap. Her fingers gently stroked her son's dark hair as he slept peacefully, exhausted from the chaotic night.
The library doors clicked open. Roman stepped inside.
He had removed his tie, his black dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing his muscular neck and tattoos. He looked weary, but his dark eyes instantly softened the moment he saw Meera sitting safely on the sofa.
He walked over quietly, taking a seat on the leather ottoman across from her so as not to wake the boy.
"It's over," Roman said softly, his deep voice carrying a wave of relief. "Julian and Trent are in custody. Their network has been completely dismantled."
Meera let out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she had been holding for hours. Tears of pure relief glinted in her brown eyes. "Is it really safe now?"
"It is," Roman assured her. He reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers where it rested on the sofa cushion. "No one is ever going to threaten you or Evan again, Meera. I give you my solemn word."
Meera looked down at their joined hands. The contrast between her small, soft hand and his large, calloused, tattooed hand was striking—yet she felt a profound sense of safety she had never experienced in her entire life.
"Thank you, Roman," she whispered softly, her eyes meeting his. "For everything."
"You don't need to thank me," Roman replied, his voice dropping into an intimate whisper as he leaned in slightly closer. "You and your son brought something into this cold palace that I haven't felt in twenty years."
"What's that?" Meera asked, her breath catching in her throat.
"Life," Roman admitted honestly, his dark eyes searching hers with deep, intense devotion. "A reason to protect this place beyond power and money."
Meera felt a surge of emotion in her chest. She had spent years believing that powerful men like Roman Black were dangerous, unfeeling monsters. But over the last twelve hours, she had seen a man who was fiercely protective, deeply honorable, and unexpectedly gentle with those he cared about.
Before she could speak, Evan stirred in her lap, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He looked up at Roman, his small face brightening.
"Did you catch the bad manager?" Evan asked softly.
Roman smiled warmly, leaning forward to pat the boy's shoulder. "We did, partner. Thanks to your warning about the elevator cables."

Evan smiled proudly, snuggling back against his mother's shoulder. "Can I see the real engine room tomorrow?"
Roman chuckled—a rich, deep sound that filled the warm library. "Evan, tomorrow, I will let you run the entire mechanical control board of this hotel."
