Chapter 4 - the silver napkin

By two in the morning, the penthouse suite was locked down under heavy guard. A personal chef had brought up a late-night dinner for Evan and Meera, while Roman sat at the large glass dining table reviewing security logs on a tablet with Marcus.
Evan sat on the plush rug near the glass fireplace, meticulously constructing a miniature tower out of wooden block toys the staff had brought up for him.
Meera stood by the balcony glass, having changed out of her maid uniform into a soft, comfortable cream-colored sweater and jeans provided by the hotel's luxury boutique. Her soft brown hair fell loosely around her shoulders.
Roman glanced up from his tablet, his eyes lingering on her for a long second. Without her uniform, Meera looked breathtaking—a natural, radiant beauty that no expensive gown could replicate.
"You should eat something, Meera," Roman said softly, gesturing to the spread of roasted chicken, artisan breads, and fresh fruit on the table.
"I'm too anxious to eat, Mr. Black," she admitted, turning around to face him. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear that cable snapping. If Evan had been one second slower..."
"He wasn't," Roman interrupted, standing up from the table and walking over to stand beside her by the window. "Your son has a gift, Meera. Most adults panic in an emergency. He analyzed the problem and took action. That comes from how you raised him."
Meera looked up into Roman's rugged, handsome face. Standing this close to him, she could feel the heat radiating from his massive frame. "I just try to keep him safe. It's always been just the two of us."
"It isn't just the two of you anymore," Roman said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register that made her heart skip a beat. "You have my protection now, Meera. That means the entire weight of the Black family stands behind you."
Before Meera could process the intensity of his words, Evan suddenly stood up from the rug, holding a silver cloth napkin he had picked up from the dinner tray.
"Mom," Evan said, walking over to them. "Look at this picture."
Meera looked down at the silver napkin. It wasn't a standard hotel napkin—it was a heavy linen cloth stamped with a subtle, dark blue crest depicting an iron anchor wrapped in snakes.
Roman’s eyes widened in sharp recognition. He reached out, taking the napkin from the boy's hand.
"Where did this come from, Evan?" Roman asked quickly.
"It was tucked inside the bread basket the room service waiter brought five minutes ago," Evan explained, pointing to the silver tray resting on the side counter. "The waiter had grease on his collar, just like the man in the basement."
Roman’s face turned into a mask of pure fury. He whirled around to Marcus. "Lock down the floor! NOW!"
The crest on the napkin didn't belong to the Vance family from Chicago. It belonged to the harbor syndicate operating out of the local docks—a crew led by Roman’s former lieutenant, Julian Vance, who had been banished five years ago.

"Marcus," Roman commanded, his voice shaking the glass windows. "Bring the room service waiter to the library. Right now."
