Chapter 19 - Margaret Finally Calls Diane

Diane told me later.

Margaret called.

First time in years they spoke privately.

Margaret said:

“Did Patricia really hurt you with that collar thing?”

Diane answered:

“Yes.”

No softening.

Margaret:

“You always laughed about it.”

“I learned to.”

There.

“You wore it.”

“Because Thomas begged me not to embarrass his mother.”

There.

Same husband dynamic.

Different generation.

Margaret cried.

“I thought you were in on it.”

Diane:

“I told you later I hated it.”

“You said you hated Patricia.”

“I hated both.”

Silence.

Then Diane asked:

“Did Nora laugh?”

“No.”

“Did she say stop?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are we discussing whether you meant well?”

There.

Margaret hung up.

Called back two days later.

That mattered more.
