Chapter 10 - Why Chloe’s performance changed things

If I signed a settlement, why did Chloe’s performance matter?

Because The Lantern Sea itself had never been publicly released.

The settlement covered disputes around Ashes Above the River.

Victor’s team claimed the released composition reflected collaborative material.

But the full original symphony contained passages never used in Victor’s public work.

Chloe played one of them.

The section began with the familiar related theme, then moved into a unique developmental passage documented only in Daniel’s original files and handwritten score.

Victor recognized it.

So did Peter Lang, who happened to be at the gala.

The artistic director Elena March later said:

“Victor’s reaction was more informative than the music.”

That was not legal proof.

But the event triggered questions.

Guests searched.

Critics compared recordings.

Someone leaked that Daniel Rowan had worked extensively for Victor.

Within forty-eight hours, music journalists were asking:

Who was Daniel Rowan?

That public attention did not establish copyright ownership.

It did something else.

It made quiet handling impossible.
