Chapter 11 - Victor fires me, then corrects himself

The morning after the gala, Martin Shaw called.

“Nora, do not report for your next shift.”

“Am I fired?”

“Suspended pending review.”

“For what?”

“Breach of household confidentiality and disruption of a private event.”

“My daughter played a piano.”

“Your daughter made allegations concerning Mr. Blackwood.”

“My daughter is nine.”

“You allowed her access.”

I laughed.

Wrong sound.

“I was trying to drag her away.”

“We are reviewing.”

Two hours later, my employment lawyer called Martin.

By then I had better counsel.

Elena March had referred me to intellectual-property attorney Leah Bernstein.

Leah immediately separated issues.

Employment.

Defamation.

Copyright.

Settlement interpretation.

Child publicity.

“Do not mix them,” she said.

Victor’s company initially attempted to suspend me without pay.

Leah argued retaliation.

Blackwood House counsel reconsidered.

I remained on paid administrative leave during investigation.

Not generosity.

Risk management.

Victor was learning process too.

Reluctantly.
