Chapter 16 - The records Claire copied

Claire had copied documents.
But not where Richard thought.
No secret server.
No offshore vault.
She emailed twelve PDFs to herself.
Then printed several.
She gave a sealed envelope to her former law partner, Rebecca Stone.
Instructions:
“If I call, destroy these because the family resolved it. If I don’t call within forty-eight hours, open.”
Claire never called.
Rebecca opened the envelope.
Why did she not go immediately to police?
The documents showed questionable invoices.
Not abduction.
She called Claire.
No answer.
Called Michael.
He said Claire had left.
Rebecca asked:
“Did she leave because of North Crest?”
Michael had no idea what she meant.
Claire had not told him she was confronting Richard that night.
Rebecca became concerned.
She contacted Michael’s outside attorney.
That eventually led to the internal audit beginning two weeks after Claire’s disappearance.
Richard knew.
That was why he became more desperate in the bunker.
The outside audit was already happening.
He could not stop it without drawing attention.
So he changed strategy.
He began cooperating superficially.
Produced selected records.
Blamed coding errors.
The audit team found discrepancies but no smoking gun because the most incriminating communications were in Richard’s private family office.
Those were not produced initially.
Claire knew.
Richard needed her to sign a statement saying she had:
“misunderstood preliminary documents and left voluntarily due to marital stress.”
She refused.
For eighty-six days.
That refusal saved Michael’s career eventually.
Not because she endured heroically without breaking.
She nearly signed twice.
She told us later.
One morning she held the pen.
Then asked:
“If I sign, you let me call Michael?”
Richard said:
“After you’re somewhere safe.”
Not:
yes.
She put the pen down.

That small suspicion changed everything.
