Chapter 23 - Claire returns to work

Claire did not become a permanent victim.
She hated when journalists described her as:
“the woman in the bunker.”
She refused interviews.
One documentary producer offered a ridiculous amount.
No.
She returned to legal work gradually.
Not corporate litigation.
She joined a nonprofit governance institute advising family-owned companies on:
conflicts.
Board independence.
Founder succession.
Related-party controls.
The irony was obvious.
She used it.
At a conference, someone asked:
“Do you think family businesses are inherently dangerous?”
Claire answered:
“No. Unchecked authority is dangerous anywhere.”
Good.
She never named Richard publicly in professional speeches.
No need.
Her experience informed her.
Did not define every slide.
She also made one thing clear in therapy:
She did not want Lily growing up believing she saved Claire’s life.
So on Lily’s eighth birthday, Claire gave her a book.
Inside:
You heard me when I needed someone. Thank you for telling your dad.
Not:
You saved me.
Lily read it.
Then asked:
“Can I get gift receipt?”
Claire laughed so hard she cried.
The book was about horses.
Lily had entered a dinosaur phase.
