Chapter 5 - Michael had believed the emails

Claire did not blame Michael immediately.

That almost made it worse.

He sat beside her bed.

“I searched.”

“I know.”

“I thought—”

“I know.”

“They came from your account.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

She closed her eyes.

“For what?”

“For believing.”

That conversation lasted forty seconds before Claire became overwhelmed and asked everyone to leave.

Michael walked into the hallway.

Punched no walls.

Shouted at no nurses.

He sat on the floor.

I sat beside him.

“We thought she left.”

He stared straight ahead.

“You thought.”

I looked at him.

He continued:

“I never fully did.”

Fair.

The first email came nine hours after Claire vanished.

Her private account.

Correct punctuation.

A phrase she often used:

I need air.

Then a second email two days later.

Do not make this another Harrington search party.

That sounded like Claire.

She had complained about family control before.

Why?

Because Richard had opinions about everything.

Where Michael and Claire lived.

Their investments.

When they would have children.

Whether Claire should keep her maiden name professionally.

The forged messages worked because they sounded like a plausible rebellion.

Michael hired investigators anyway.

Richard discouraged him.

So did Marcus.

Marcus said:

“Adult missing-person cases get complicated when the person clearly says they’re safe.”

Technically true.

Michael showed police the emails.

That shifted early assessment.

Then Marcus produced exterior security logs indicating Claire’s vehicle left the west gate at 9:42 p.m. the night she vanished.

False.

Not the raw logs.

A report.

Prepared by security.

Signed by Marcus.

The original server data would later show the gate never opened at 9:42.

A manual event was inserted into the report.

Michael trusted the report.

So did I.

Claire had never left.

Her car was moved later by another security vehicle while cameras were under:

“maintenance.”

We had accepted too many polished documents.

May you like

Again.
