Chapter 9 - How they staged Claire’s disappearance

The plan was crude because it began after the confinement.

That made it both easier and harder to discover.

Claire’s phone remained in Marcus’s office for six hours.

Richard demanded her password.

She refused.

Face recognition?

The phone had disabled facial unlock after repeated failed attempts.

They could not access it.

But her laptop was in Michael and Claire’s Manhattan apartment.

Richard did not have access.

So how did the emails come from Claire’s account?

A saved login on an old family iPad at the mansion.

Claire had used it months earlier.

The browser still held a valid session.

Marcus found it.

He later admitted that.

Richard dictated the first email.

Marcus sent it.

The second was drafted by Richard’s longtime personal assistant, Janice Cole—not related to our family—who was told Claire had asked for help sending a message after leaving.

Janice believed it.

Important.

She did not know Claire was confined.

Richard said Claire:

“didn’t want to speak directly.”

Janice drafted using phrases from older correspondence.

Richard edited.

Marcus sent.

Claire’s car was moved to the train station by a contract driver.

He was told:

“Mrs. Harrington took a car service and wants her vehicle retrieved later.”

He left it.

No knowledge.

Security cameras around the west drive went offline for forty-three minutes under a maintenance ticket.

Who created the ticket?

Marcus.

The gate report was manually altered.

Phone?

They powered it off.

Later placed it inside the car.

Police found it.

No use after disappearance.

That supported voluntary departure less than they intended, but not enough initially to prove confinement.

Why did the lie last three months?

Because Richard and Marcus had legitimate access to the exact systems investigators relied on.

The security chief investigating a disappearance was helping maintain it.

The fox was not merely guarding the henhouse.

He was writing the incident report.
