Chapter 26 - The hatch

Three years after rescue, Lily was nine.

The mansion renovation had long been completed.

The hidden hatch was gone.

A normal lower-hall security door led to the former bunker.

The room stored archived paper records no longer needed daily.

Interior release.

Fire detection.

Code compliance.

Boring.

Lily asked:

“Can I see?”

First time.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Samantha agreed.

Claire did not need to be involved.

This was Lily’s memory too.

We went downstairs.

Lights on.

Clean white walls.

Metal shelves.

Boxes.

No mattress.

No bottles.

No old chemical toilet.

Lily stood in the doorway.

“This it?”

“Yes.”

“Smaller.”

“Probably.”

“Aunt Claire here eighty-six days?”

“Yes.”

She walked inside.

Touched the wall.

Then looked up.

“Where I knock?”

I showed her the ceiling area beneath the central hall.

She laughed.

“I stomp there.”

“You did.”

“Did she know me feet?”

“She said you walked like a pony.”

“That rude.”

“Accurate.”

She looked at me.

Then:

“Why Grandpa not open?”

Big question.

“Because opening the door meant admitting he had done something wrong, and he kept choosing not to admit it.”

“That stupid.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus too?”

“Yes.”

She thought.

“Could stop day two.”

“Yes.”

“Day three.”

“Yes.”

“Day eighty.”

“Yes.”

She frowned.

“So every day choice.”

There.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

Then walked out.

“Done.”

That was it.

We locked the room.

From outside.

But anyone inside could open it.

I checked.

Once.

Not three times.

May you like

Growth.
