Chapter 14

Ryan agreed to see Lily nine months after the injury.

Not because Daniel requested it.

Daniel was specifically told not to pressure either child.

Ryan brought it up himself after his therapist told him Lily had made a written apology.

“Can she say it?”

Claire asked:

“Do you want her to?”

Ryan thought.

“Yes.”

The meeting happened in a therapist’s office.

Claire sat with Ryan.

Nora sat with Lily.

Daniel was not in the room.

That had been Lily’s request.

Ryan entered holding a toy dinosaur.

Lily looked terrified.

For the first time, she seemed thirteen rather than furious.

She had rehearsed an apology.

The therapist told her not to perform it.

So Lily spoke badly.

Which made it better.

“I was mad.”

Ryan stared at her.

“I know.”

“I was mad at Dad.”

Ryan frowned.

“You hit me.”

“I know.”

“With a brick.”

Lily started crying.

“I know.”

“Why?”

She took a long time.

“I thought you had something that was supposed to be mine.”

Ryan looked completely confused.

“I have dinosaurs.”

Claire nearly laughed despite herself.

Lily wiped her face.

“I mean Dad.”

Ryan looked at his mother.

Then back at Lily.

“Dad can have two kids.”

The simplicity hurt every adult in the room.

Lily nodded.

“I know that now.”

Ryan touched his forehead where only a faint scar remained.

“You can’t hit me again.”

“I won’t.”

The therapist gently corrected:

“You can promise to work very hard never to hurt him again. Nobody should make impossible guarantees about emotions.”

Lily nodded.

“I will.”

Ryan considered her.

Then held out the dinosaur.

“You can look at him.”

Not keep.

Not hug.

Not forgiveness.

Look.

Lily accepted the dinosaur with both hands.

It was enough.

Future contact continued slowly under professional guidance.

No forced sibling fantasy.

No pretending the brick never happened.

By the end of the year, Ryan could sit in the same room with Lily without fear.

Lily could hear Ryan call Daniel “Dad” without feeling erased.

May you like

That was not perfect.

It was real.
