Chapter 6

Megan had kept copies of Daniel’s messages.
Nora found them while organizing her sister’s estate.
She turned them over to the family attorneys because Lily’s custody and living arrangements were now contested.
The messages went back years.
Most were ordinary.
School schedules.
Support payments.
Medical bills.
Birthday plans.
Photographs Lily wanted Daniel to see.
Then the tone changed approximately eighteen months before Megan died.
Megan began asking Daniel to tell Claire.
One message read:
She has been your wife for a decade. She should not learn about Lily during a crisis.
Daniel answered:
Not yet. Ryan is still too young and Claire has enough on her plate.
Six months later Megan tried again.
You are making Lily build a future around something Claire has never agreed to.
Daniel:
I’ll handle Claire when the time comes.
Claire read the exchange in Rebecca’s office.
Daniel sat across from her.
She did not cry.
That frightened him more.
“How many times did Megan tell you?”
Daniel looked at the messages.
“A lot.”
“She was protecting me more than you were.”
“Yes.”
“She was the woman you kept secret from me, and she was the one saying I deserved the truth.”
“Yes.”
Claire turned another page.
Megan wrote:
If I die before you tell her, do not use my death to force this on Claire. Lily deserves a home where she is actually welcomed, not one created by guilt.
Claire stopped.
Daniel could not look at her.
“That’s pretty specific.”
“I know.”
“What did you say?”
The next message was his.
Nothing is happening to you. Stop talking like this.
Claire put the papers down.
“You avoided answering her.”
“Yes.”
“You do that very well.”
Daniel accepted it.
The third clue was now undeniable.
Megan had understood the danger before anyone else.

Daniel was not merely postponing an uncomfortable conversation.
He was allowing circumstances to move toward a moment when Claire would have less freedom to say no.
