Chapter 2

Ryan had a concussion and a scalp wound that required a few stitches.
The scan showed no skull fracture or intracranial bleeding.
Claire cried when the doctor said he was expected to recover fully.
Daniel was permitted into the hospital room only after Claire agreed.
She stood near the window when he entered.
Ryan was asleep.
A bandage covered one side of his forehead.
Daniel approached the bed.
Claire immediately said:
“Stop there.”
He stopped.
She held Lily’s birth record in one hand.
“Thirteen.”
“Yes.”
“You met me when she was already alive.”
“Yes.”
“So you didn’t cheat on me to create her.”
“No.”
Claire laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You think that helps?”
“No.”
“When did you find out?”
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“Before you and I married.”
Claire stared at him.
“How long before?”
“Almost a year.”
She sat down slowly.
Their marriage was eleven years old.
“You knew through almost our entire relationship.”
“Yes.”
“Did Megan know about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did Lily?”
“When she was old enough to understand that I was her father.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel continued because stopping now would only become another form of cowardice.
He had met Megan before Claire.
They were never married.
Their relationship ended before Megan discovered she was pregnant.
By the time Daniel learned Lily existed, the child was already a toddler.
He took a paternity test.
It confirmed what Megan already believed.
From then on, Daniel paid support.
Visited.
Attended birthdays when he could.
Built a relationship with Lily.
Secretly.
“Why?”
Claire asked.
Daniel had rehearsed that answer for years.
Now every version sounded disgusting.
“I was afraid of losing you.”
Claire stared.
“That is not an answer that makes you look better.”
“I know.”
“You married me knowing you already had a daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me become pregnant with Ryan.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
“You let me talk about how terrified I was to become a mother while you already knew what being a father felt like.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
Claire began crying.
Quietly.
That hurt more than yelling would have.
Then she asked:
“Did Lily know about Ryan?”
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Did Ryan know about her?”
“No.”
There it was.
One child knew he had a brother.
The other had been denied a sister.
Not for safety.
Not by court order.
Because Daniel wanted control over when two parts of his life collided.
Claire looked toward Ryan.
“What happened after Megan died?”
Daniel hesitated.
Claire saw it.
Her expression changed.
“What did you promise Lily?”
The question landed harder than Daniel expected.
“I told her she wouldn’t be alone.”
“That isn’t what she said.”
Daniel remained silent.
Claire stood.
“She said you told her this would be her home.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Yes.”
Claire stepped backward as though he had struck her too.
“You promised another child my home.”
“Claire—”
“Without telling me she existed.”
Daniel had no defense.
Outside the hospital room, Rebecca arrived carrying a folder.
She did not enter.
Claire pointed toward the door.
“Leave.”
May you like
Daniel obeyed.
That was new too.
