Chapter 4

Ryan went home after two nights in the hospital.

He was tired.

Irritable.

Sensitive to noise.

The doctor restricted rough play and advised Claire to watch for worsening symptoms.

Daniel moved into one of his downtown apartments.

Claire stayed at the Bennett house with Ryan.

Security arrangements changed immediately.

Not because Lily was treated like a criminal threat.

Because a frightened five-year-old deserved to know where he was safe.

Ryan asked why Daniel was not sleeping at home.

Claire refused to burden him with adult betrayal.

“Daddy and I are working through something.”

“Because Lily?”

“Partly.”

Ryan touched the bandage near his temple.

“She’s mean.”

Claire could have agreed.

Instead:

“She did something very dangerous.”

“Does she hate me?”

“I don’t know.”

Ryan frowned.

The truth was enough.

Meanwhile, Lily underwent a psychological assessment.

Daniel received information only through the proper process.

The preliminary picture was painful.

Lily was grieving Megan intensely.

She was furious with Daniel.

She felt displaced by Ryan.

Most importantly, she genuinely believed Daniel had promised she would become a full member of his household as soon as Megan died.

That belief had not been invented after the assault.

Nora confirmed it.

“She talked about your house for months.”

Daniel sat across from her in Rebecca’s conference room.

“What did she say?”

“That you were making her a bedroom.”

Daniel looked down.

Nora continued.

“That Claire would become part of her family.”

“I never said Claire would be her mother.”

“Maybe not.”

Nora’s voice hardened.

“But you told a thirteen-year-old she was coming home to a woman who didn’t know she existed.”

Daniel had no answer.

Nora had never liked him.

Now he understood why.

“She asked Megan whether Ryan would still be the favorite.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“What did Megan say?”

“That children aren’t supposed to compete for parents.”

Nora folded her arms.

“Do you know what Lily said?”

Daniel waited.

“Dad says Ryan has had him long enough.”

Daniel felt something drop inside him.

“I never said that.”

“Not in those words, maybe.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then what did you say?”

Daniel searched his memory.

During one angry conversation with Lily, she had complained that Ryan got every Christmas morning while she received secret visits days later.

Daniel had told her:

“When things change, we’ll make up for lost time.”

At the time it sounded loving.

Now he heard what a grieving child might have heard.

A future correction.

A debt Ryan somehow represented.

That was the second clue.

Daniel had not only hidden Lily.

He had fed her the belief that someday secrecy would end by moving her into the center of his existing family.
