Chapter 3

Lily was not taken directly into Daniel’s custody.

After the assault, child-welfare authorities and juvenile specialists arranged a temporary placement with Megan’s older sister, Nora Walsh.

Nora had been caring for Lily since Megan’s death.

Daniel had planned to change that.

Nobody had told Claire.

The court now had reasons to slow everything down.

Ryan needed protection.

Lily needed assessment.

Daniel’s physical reaction toward Lily also required review.

Rebecca explained it plainly.

“You do not get to decide where either child sleeps this week.”

Daniel hated the sentence.

He accepted it.

The first clue to the deeper betrayal appeared when Claire returned home to pack clothes for herself and Ryan.

She opened a locked guest room at the far end of the second floor.

Daniel had forgotten about the delivery boxes inside.

A new desk.

Bookshelves.

A pale upholstered bed.

Boxes of clothing in teenage sizes.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later because security had called him.

She was holding an invoice.

Bedroom Preparation — L.B.

Dated four months earlier.

Before Megan died.

Claire looked at him.

“You were preparing this room.”

“Yes.”

“For Lily.”

“Yes.”

“While her mother was still alive.”

Daniel’s shoulders lowered.

“Megan was worried about what would happen if anything happened to her.”

Claire stared at him.

“So this wasn’t a promise you made while everyone was grieving.”

“No.”

“You had a plan.”

Daniel did not answer.

The silence answered for him.

Claire walked past him.

“Where are you going?”

“Hotel.”

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“You’re thinking this is about another daughter.”

Daniel said nothing.

“It isn’t anymore.”

Her voice shook.

“It’s about how long you were willing to make decisions about my life before I was allowed to know they existed.”

Then she left.

That afternoon, Ryan asked from his hospital bed:

“Where’s the big girl?”

Claire looked at him.

“What big girl?”

“The one who hurt me.”

Her heart tightened.

“She’s somewhere safe.”

“Is she coming home?”

Claire could not answer quickly enough.

Ryan noticed.

“I don’t want her here.”

Claire took his hand.

“She is not coming here right now.”

That answer she could guarantee.

Whether Lily would ever enter the house again was no longer Daniel’s decision alone.
