Chapter 5 - Eleven Employees

The next morning, Michael postponed the charity dinner indefinitely.
His attorneys became involved.
So did police, because Rose’s slap and my kick had been recorded.
I gave a statement.
Rose did too.
We were told not to discuss details with witnesses.
Meanwhile Michael ordered an independent review of household staffing records.
That was when the number appeared.
Eleven.
Eleven domestic employees had left in twenty-six months.
Five maids.
Two cooks.
One driver.
One personal assistant.
Two housemen.
Not all because of Rose.
Some left for better jobs.
One moved states.
One retired.
But six departures involved disciplinary accusations.
Broken valuables.
Missing items.
Insubordination.
Inappropriate access to private rooms.
Rose handled every one.
Michael had received summary reports.
He signed termination settlements.
He rarely met the employees personally.

That bothered him.
It should have.
