Chapter 4 - GEMMA HAYES

Gemma did not come from the Moretti world.
That became one of Ophelia’s problems with her.
Her father drove city buses.
Her mother managed a dental office.
Gemma had completed two years of community college and was saving to finish a nursing degree.
MDS hired her for flexible domestic work because the pay and benefits were better than restaurant shifts.
She became popular at Villa Moretti because she did not act impressed.
Old families need people like that.
The first time Lucy had trouble breathing near her, Gemma followed the posted care plan.
The second time, Ophelia called her insolent.
Then came the incident reports.
Gemma filed three.
MDS closed two as “family communication issues.”
The third remained open because the assigned safety coordinator refused to close it without documentation.
Who was the coordinator?
Elaine Porter.
Forty-seven.
Employed by MDS for twelve years.
She later told the auditor:
“I was pressured to downgrade medical interference into household disagreement.”
By who?
Ophelia.
There.
Then another employee confirmed.
