Chapter 13 - THE WOLF LESSON

We kept heritage education.

Changed it completely.

No obedience pledges.

No child hierarchy.

No “house eats first.”

The family historian who objected to Ione’s program became director.

Children learned:

where the Halbrooks came from;

which businesses were legitimate;

which earlier relatives had criminal involvement;

which relatives went to prison;

which women held the family together while men got themselves indicted;

which myths were exaggerated;

which documents contradicted family stories.

The black wolf remained.

The historian showed Oren the crest at age seven.

“What does it mean?”

Oren said:

“Wolf.”

Excellent.

Then:

“Do you have to be one?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Oren chose a bear sticker for his folder.

No one corrected him.

History survived.
