I found Lydia’s parenting notebook years later.
Not sentimental.
Mostly pediatric instructions, feeding notes, medication reminders, and sleep logs.
Then one page:
Things I don’t want Oren to inherit:
fear of disappointing powerful relatives;
the idea that crying is weakness;
the idea that family secrets are noble;
Cassian’s inability to find socks.
I laughed.
Then:
Things I do want him to inherit:
stories;
food;
music;
names;
places;
people who show up.
No wolf.
No house.
No blood hierarchy.
She had solved the problem before we knew we had one.
I showed Oren when he was fifteen.
