Chapter 19 - MERRITT APOLOGIZES PUBLICLY

Merritt made his public correction at a family history dinner.
Not because I demanded.
Because he believed silence had been public.
He stood.
No microphone.
“I watched Ione restrain Oren because I believed an old rule deserved a chance to prove itself. That was wrong.”
Then:
“I believed staying seated made me neutral. It made me useful to the wrong thing.”
Good.
Then:
“The old house is not law.”
Very good.
Carlo joked:
“Finally.”
Merritt told him to shut up.
Better.
Oren was fourteen.
He looked embarrassed by the attention.
Later:
“Did he have to say my name?”
“No.”
“Could’ve said ‘a child.’”
“Yes.”
May you like
“Old people dramatic.”
Absolutely.
