At nine, Oren refused to attend a family memorial dinner.
Reason:
Soccer tournament.
Old Halbrooks would have called it disrespect.
Merritt asked:
“Can the tournament be missed?”
Oren said:
“No.”
Technically it could.
He did not want to.
I asked:
“Who is the memorial for?”
“Great-Uncle Richard.”
“Did you know him?”
“No.”
“Then go play.”
Ione heard.
Surprised me by agreeing.
“Children should not be props at funerals for people they never met.”
Merritt stared at her.
“Who are you?”
