Chapter 10 - What Celeste actually gave her

The central secret was not a hidden marriage promise.

There was no final letter naming Valeria as Celeste’s successor.

No deed.

No trust amendment.

No secret engagement.

No legal authority to become part of my family.

What existed was much narrower.

During Celeste’s final four months, she gave Valeria a temporary event liaison role.

Foundation board minutes confirmed it.

Scope:

Coordinate gala logistics.

Communicate with venues.

Approve seating within board-approved guest lists.

Handle Celeste’s appearance cancellations.

Assist with Marnie during foundation events when requested.

Term:

Through the end of that gala season.

It expired automatically.

Celeste also gave Valeria permission to collect the travel ring from the jeweler and return it to the Drake household.

Not keep it.

The decisive record was not a dramatic deathbed message.

It was a mundane voice note Celeste left for our house manager, sent three days before she died while discussing personal effects:

Valeria has the jeweler ticket for my small band. When it’s ready, have her drop it with the rest of my jewelry. Marnie may want it someday.

Authenticated from our house manager’s phone backup and the original message server.

That was enough.

Valeria had heard Celeste discuss the ring as something Marnie might want.

Then after Celeste died, Valeria collected it.

Kept it.

Wore it privately.

Used photographs of it in a proposed Bellarose Jewelry “continuity” campaign.

At the same time, she gradually expanded a limited event role into a social identity:

Family Hospitality Director.

Drake family representative.

Celeste’s chosen hostess.

Then:

The woman beside Salvatore.

Her scheme did not depend on forged signatures.

It depended on scope inflation.

One-event seating email became permanent seating authority.

Temporary gala liaison became family representation.

Permission to collect a ring became a supposed gift.

My silence became romantic endorsement.

My grief became consent.

Then money followed.

Hotels.

Jewelry sponsors.

Appearance fees.

Travel.

Social access.

She had built a career around a story that Celeste selected her to continue the public role of Mrs. Drake.

And Marnie was the person who threatened that story most.

Because Marnie remembered the difference between:

Helping Mommy.

And becoming Mommy.

That was why the seat mattered.

Valeria was not fighting an eight-year-old over furniture.

She was fighting the one person in the room who refused to accept the mythology she had built.
