Chapter 7 - Marnie remembers the photographs

Marnie had seen Valeria wearing the ring before.
Not in public.
In Valeria’s room.
She told her therapist:
“She put it on and looked in the mirror.”
When?
Months earlier.
Marnie had been sitting on the bed while Valeria got ready for a gala.
“What did you say?”
“I said Mommy had one like that.”
“What did Valeria say?”
“She said Mommy wanted her to have pretty things.”
Again:
Not a full confession.
A child’s memory.
Then Marnie remembered something else.
Valeria once showed her a photograph of Celeste seated beside me.
She pointed at Celeste.
Then herself in another photograph taken after Celeste’s death.
She said:
“Families keep going.”
Marnie asked:
“Are you my new mommy?”
Valeria said:
“If your father stops being stubborn.”
That angered me.
But it also revealed Valeria’s goal was not merely foundation access.
She wanted position.
Socially.
Romantically.
Inside the family.
Did I encourage hope?
Yes.
Not marriage.
But dinners.
Travel.
Private time.
I had allowed ambiguity because confronting it seemed exhausting.
My avoidance gave Valeria room to build a story around me.
Again:
May you like
My responsibility.
Not her license to mistreat Marnie.
