Chapter 5 - The seat at the foundation

Arthur ordered a review of foundation records.
Not because I believed the foundation was stealing.
Because Valeria’s phrase would not leave me.
Your wife begged me for that seat.
We found an old email from Celeste.
Subject:
Saturday seating
Celeste wrote:
Valeria, please take my seat at the donor table Saturday. Salvatore will try to hide near the back if I’m not there. Keep him where people can see him, and keep an eye on Marnie if she gets tired.
One dinner.
Saturday.
Then another email three weeks later:
Thank you for covering these events while I’m down. It matters to me that the foundation doesn’t feel like it disappears because I’m sick.
Valeria had forwarded that second email to several event planners after Celeste died.
But she clipped the beginning and closing lines.
Recipients saw:
It matters to me that the foundation doesn’t feel like it disappears. Valeria knows how I want these nights handled.
The actual message had more context.
No forged words.
Selective quotation.
Misleading.
Then seating records.
Six months after Celeste died, Valeria instructed planners:
Mrs. Drake’s former seat should remain with the designated family hostess.
Designated by whom?
No document.
No board resolution.
Yet nobody challenged it.
Why?
Because Valeria spoke with confidence.
Because I appeared and sat beside her.
Because silence looks like approval.
Then Marnie.
At three separate events, seating plans originally placed Marnie beside me.
Final plans moved her:
Two chairs away.
At children’s table once.
With my sister another time.
Who requested changes?
Valeria.
Reason:
Protocol and donor access.
May you like
Marnie had noticed.
I had not.
