Chapter 15 - Valeria pleads on the child case

Valeria resolved the misdemeanor involving Marnie first.
Plea:
No contest to child battery.
Sentence:
Twelve months probation.
Forty hours community service.
Anger-management counseling.
No contact with Marnie.
Fine.
No jail.
She apologized in court?
Briefly.
“I should never have touched her.”
No:
She provoked me.
No:
It was only a chair.
Better than I expected.
Marnie did not attend.
I told her only:
“The court handled the part about the banquet.”
“Is Valeria in jail?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the injury was minor and the charge was a misdemeanor.”
Marnie frowned.
“She was mean.”
“Yes.”
“Mean isn’t jail?”
“Usually not by itself.”
She thought about that.
