Chapter 1 - The Slap That Silenced the Room

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The slap cracked across the banquet hall so sharply that the string quartet stopped in the middle of a note.

Evelyn Vercetti staggered sideways.

At seventy-nine, she was still elegant enough to command a room without raising her voice. Burgundy silk. Pearls. Silver hair swept neatly back.

But now one trembling hand caught the edge of the long dining table before she fell.

Marcella Vercetti stood over her.

Emerald gown.

Diamonds.

A cruel smile.

All Evelyn had done was reach for the chair beside Dominic’s place setting.

The same chair she had occupied at every Vercetti family dinner for more than thirty years.

Marcella caught Evelyn by the arm.

Then she hit her.

“Old queens don’t choose seats anymore.”

Nobody moved.

Nearly forty family members, attorneys, business partners, and longtime friends stared into their plates.

Not one person defended Evelyn.

Then the massive double doors opened.

Dominic Vercetti stepped inside.

He was still wearing his black tuxedo from the foundation gala downstairs. Broad shoulders filled the doorway. His expression was unreadable.

Then he saw his mother holding her cheek.

Everything inside him stopped.

He crossed the room without saying a word.

“Ma.”

Dominic reached her first.

He steadied her carefully, then moved her behind him.

Evelyn’s fingers closed around his sleeve.

They were shaking.

“She wants me gone before midnight.”

Dominic’s eyes lifted toward Marcella.

The room seemed to shrink.

Marcella didn’t back away.

She actually smiled.

That smile disappeared when Dominic walked across the marble floor toward her.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Then his open hand struck her cheek.

Marcella spun sideways and fell against a padded banquet chair.

Gasps exploded around the table.

Dominic never raised his voice.

He simply stood there while Marcella slowly pushed herself upright.

Her face burned with humiliation.

“Keep protecting her,” she hissed, “and you lose the family name.”

Dominic looked at her as though she had said something almost amusing.

“She gave me the name.”

Marcella froze.

For the first time all evening, real fear passed across her face.

Then she recovered.

She picked up a leather folder from the table.

“You think this is about a chair?”

She tapped the folder.

“At 12:01 tonight, this house, the Vercetti companies, and every vote attached to them change hands.”

Dominic’s gaze hardened.

Evelyn whispered behind him.

“Don’t let her take that chair.”

Dominic turned.

The old mahogany chair Evelyn had reached for was gone.

A waiter was already wheeling it through a service door.

And when Dominic looked back at Marcella, she was smiling again.

👉 Dominic finally understood that his mother hadn’t been slapped for choosing the wrong seat — she had been stopped from reaching something Marcella desperately needed before midnight.
