Chapter 9 - The Police Saw More Than Marcella Expected

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Two officers entered first.
Then a detective.
Detective Sarah Whitmore had the patient expression of someone who had already been warned she was walking into a rich family disaster.
Marcella hurried toward her.
“He assaulted me.”
Dominic didn’t interrupt.
Marcella pointed at her cheek.
“He struck me in front of everyone.”
Whitmore looked at Dominic.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
A murmur passed through the room.
Marcella almost smiled.
Dominic continued.
“After she struck my seventy-nine-year-old mother.”
Whitmore looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn’s cheek was still red.
The smile disappeared from Marcella’s face.
Whitmore exhaled.
“Wonderful.”
She looked around.
“Anybody record any of this?”
Half the room lifted phones.
Marcella went pale.
What had happened at a supposedly private family dinner had suddenly become documented from twelve different angles.
Whitmore watched two clips.
Then she saw the forged paperwork.
Then Cole spoke.
Then Thomas spoke.
Within fifteen minutes, Marcella’s assault complaint was no longer the only issue in the room.
Whitmore held up the disputed power of attorney.
“This document is being represented as genuine?”
Marcella folded her arms.
“It is genuine.”
Evelyn said, “It is not.”
Harold added, “And the physician has admitted he never examined her.”
Whitmore looked at Cole.
He nodded miserably.
The detective’s expression hardened.
“Everybody stays available.”
Marcella stepped forward.
“We have a private business deadline at midnight.”
“Congratulations.”
Whitmore handed the paperwork to another officer.
“Your deadline does not outrank an investigation.”
Dominic checked the clock.
11:23.
He needed the archive.
He needed the Founder’s Amendment.
And he needed it before Marcella’s merger became eligible.
He spoke quietly to Whitmore.
“My mother has evidence in a secure archive downtown that may establish financial fraud.”
Marcella snapped, “There is no evidence!”
Whitmore looked at her.
“You seem very certain about a location you claim doesn’t matter.”
Marcella stopped.
Dominic almost smiled.
Whitmore allowed Dominic, Evelyn, and Harold to leave after taking their information.
Marcella tried to follow.
“No,” Whitmore said.
Marcella’s face changed.
“Excuse me?”
“You filed the complaint. You can stay and finish your statement.”
For the first time all night, Marcella looked trapped.
Dominic placed his coat around his mother’s shoulders.
As they approached the doors, Marcella called after him.
“You think you’re going to save her?”
Dominic stopped.
Marcella’s smile returned.
“The key isn’t at the foundation building anymore.”
Dominic turned.
Marcella leaned back against the table.
“Daniel delivered it twenty minutes ago.”
“Then where is it?”
“You’ll find out after midnight.”
Evelyn suddenly touched Dominic’s arm.
“She’s lying.”
Marcella’s eyes narrowed.
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“You never knew what the key opened.”
Marcella’s smile disappeared.
Dominic looked at his mother.
Neither had time to explain.
They stepped into the night.
11:26.
Thirty-four minutes remained.

👉 Marcella had stolen the right key — but Evelyn had just revealed that she had spent years making sure the wrong person would never know which lock mattered.
