Chapter 13 - The Letter Marcella Hid

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Whitmore read only the first line.

“Dom — if you’re reading this, something went wrong.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Julian’s voice seemed to return instantly.

Always joking.

Always restless.

Always calling Dominic when he needed help and insisting everything was fine before Dominic arrived.

Whitmore continued.

“I think you should hear the rest in person.”

“We have four minutes.”

Harold stepped closer.

“The certification?”

“Yes. Original embossed seal.”

Harold exhaled.

“Send a high-resolution scan immediately.”

Whitmore did.

11:56.

Harold uploaded the original certification into the challenge package.

Digital notice transmitted.

11:57.

The escrow company acknowledged receipt.

Merger execution suspended pending authentication.

Marcella’s midnight deadline was dead.

Dominic stared at the confirmation.

He had expected relief.

Instead, he felt strangely empty.

Evelyn took his hand.

“We stopped her.”

“For tonight.”

“Yes.”

Dominic looked toward the screen.

“But I want to know why Julian hid that letter.”

They returned to the estate at 12:19.

Midnight had passed.

Marcella’s banquet had collapsed.

Half the guests were gone.

The others remained because none could pull themselves away.

Marcella sat at the table with Detective Whitmore nearby.

Her emerald gown no longer looked regal.

It looked like armor after a battle.

Whitmore handed Dominic the envelope.

He opened it.

Julian’s handwriting covered four pages.

Dom,

I don’t know if this will ever matter, but I’m writing it because I’ve started seeing things differently.

Marcella has been asking questions about Mom’s shares.

At first I thought she was helping with estate planning.

Then she asked what would happen if Mom couldn’t vote anymore.

Dominic looked up.

Marcella stared at the table.

He continued.

She wants me to support a merger that would move family assets into a new holding company.

I told her no.

She says you control too much and Mom controls the rest.

She thinks I deserve more.

Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t.

But I know this: Mom built more of this family than anyone admits.

Don’t let anybody erase that.

Evelyn began crying silently.

Dominic kept reading.

There was one final paragraph.

If something happens to me, do not turn this into revenge.

That’s what Dad would have done.

Protect Mom.

Protect the company.

And make Marcella answer questions with lawyers in the room, not soldiers.

Despite everything, Dominic smiled.

“That sounds like Julian.”

Whitmore asked, “Anything criminal in the letter?”

“No accusation of a crime.”

Dominic folded it carefully.

“Just a warning.”

Marcella finally looked up.

“He hated living in your shadow.”

Dominic met her eyes.

“Then why did he warn me?”

Her face twisted.

“Because he was weak.”

Evelyn stood.

“No.”

Her voice silenced the room.

“My son was many things.”

She stepped closer to Marcella.

“But he was not weak.”

Marcella’s eyes flickered.

And Evelyn added—

“You were counting on him being dead because dead men cannot contradict you.”

Whitmore placed another evidence bag on the table.

Inside was Julian’s phone.

Recovered from Marcella’s locked office.

Marcella suddenly stood.

“Where did you get that?”

Dominic knew immediately.

Whatever was on that phone frightened her more than the Founder’s Amendment.

👉 The merger had already failed, but Julian’s forgotten phone was about to turn a family power struggle into something far more dangerous for Marcella.
